On 11 April 2023, ICA officers at Tuas Checkpoint foiled 2 different smuggling attempts within 2 hours to smuggle a total of 8,970 cartons of contraband cigarettes into Singapore.

Case #1

ICA officers noticed anomalies in the scanned images of a Malaysia-registered lorry and upon further inspection, a total of 2,250 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were found hidden within a consignment of Cocoa Beans.

Case #2

Two hours later, ICA officers foiled another smuggling attempt totalling 6,720 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden in barrels of a liquid consignment after noticing anomalies in the scanned images of a Malaysia-registered lorry.

Both cases were referred to Singapore Customs for further investigations.

As Guardians of our Borders, ICA is committed to facilitating trade and safe travels while keeping Singapore’s borders safe & secure.

Contraband cigarettes

The dangers of contraband cigarettes in Singapore are many. They pose a health risk to smokers.

Contraband cigarettes are often produced without the same quality control measures as legal cigarettes, meaning they may contain harmful chemicals and toxins at higher levels.

This puts smokers at risk of developing serious health conditions such as lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses.

Another danger of contraband cigarettes is the potential for organized crime and gang activity. The illegal trade of cigarettes is a lucrative business, and criminal organizations may use the profits to fund other illegal activities.

This poses a threat to public safety, as these criminal organizations may resort to violence and other forms of illegal activity to protect their interests.

Potential penalties

The buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, having in possession or dealing with duty-unpaid goods are serious offences under the Customs Act and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act.

Offenders can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded, jailed for up to six years, or both. Vehicles used in committing such offences can be seized.

Type of OffenceComposition Amount
Failure to declare or making an incorrect declaration of cigarettes1st offence: S$200 per packet or per 20 sticks or part thereof

2nd offence: S$500 per packet or per 20 sticks or part thereof

3rd offence: S$800 per packet or per 20 sticks of part thereof

GUY ORDERED DOMINO’S PIZZA AT 7.30PM, WAIT UNTIL MIDNIGHT STILL MIA & ALL HIS GUESTS LEFT

0

16hr + with NO PIZZA and NO REFUND and NO COMM

Dear Domino’s Customer Service,

I am writing to express my extreme disappointment with your service. Yesterday, at 7:28 PM, I placed an order for a pizza through your app, and it was supposed to be delivered within 90 minutes.

However, to my utter dismay, the pizza never arrived. Was in queue 2 times for 45mins+ to talk to customer service so I can cancel the order(bcz it is the only way to cancel order) but never connected to agent.

I had invited some friends over for a get-together, and we were all eagerly waiting for the pizza to arrive. As time passed, we kept checking the app for updates, but there was no update on the delivery status.

Finally, after waiting until the middle of the night, my friends had to leave without having anything to eat. This was a complete embarrassment for me, and it ruined our evening.

Your failure to deliver the pizza has caused me significant inconvenience and embarrassment, not to mention the wasted time and money spent on the order.

I demand an explanation with compensation and an apology for this gross negligence on your part. As a number 1 Pizza company in the world (which only you claims), I expect better from your company.

If your company and staff is incompetent to prepare and deliver pizza then why even take the order ? And till now after 16hr+ there no email stating the same or no apology SMS/CALL. like really ?

And where is my money ? Do Customer need to remind you that pizza is not delivered then you refund them ? totally gross and pathetic.

I look forward to hearing back from you with a resolution to this matter.

  1. Some outlets have very poor reviews for delivery. I suggest you leave a google review for this outlet to warn others.
Previously when I wanted to order a delivery, the store (Kovan) tagged to my address had terrible reviews. So I opted to pick up for the rivervale store instead and there was no problems.
  2. Singapore domino is hit and miss. Its best u drop down their outlet to clarify. Compensation wise i think what they do is only a refund. Its not America tho where u can sue for everything under the sun. Do India have dominos too?
  3. It should be Domi- NO PIZZA

MAGGOTS RAINED DOWN FROM CEILING INTO MAN’S TABLE & FOOD @ CLEMENTI’S 18 CHEFS

    0

    It’s raining maggots!!

So, we decided to go to 18 Chefs after realising that the restaurant we chose earlier had a massive long queue. My parents-in-law had just driven 6 hours to reach and obviously tired, so just want to eat anything and retire for the night. Woohoo! There were seats for us immediately!

Halfway through eating, I was talking to Jason Seow when I saw something moving on the table from the corner of my eye. I saw a cluster on the table that looks like petals of baby’s breath.

On closer look, they were moving and were maggots!! I looked left and right to see where they came from and suddenly more were appearing on the table, some went into our food.

At this point, both of us looked up at the black ceiling and to our greatest horror, there were clusters of maggots raining down from the aircon vent!!

And yes, the aircon vent had partially become white, presumably filled with the maggots that rained upon us.

Of course, we told the waiter (looks like student working part time) and to his credit, he swiftly changed us to another table and offered to replace our food, before telling his manager what happened.

The manager went over to the table to see the maggots. By right, they should cordon off that table right? No, the manager brought in another group of diners to sit at the exact same table.

During the whole duration of our meal there, the restaurant manager did not even bother to talk to us or offer her apologies for our horrific dining experience.

It happened between 6.20pm to 7.30pm on 21 April 2023 at table 34 at The Clementi Mall branch.

I’m not sure whether it’s the restaurant’s or the mall’s responsibility to ensure they have their aircon serviced regularly and to ensure that the restaurant is clean and safe to eat in. This is clearly unacceptable!!

FOODPANDA RIDER CANCELLED CUSTOMER’S ORDER BECAUSE HIS PMA TOO BIG FOR CORRIDOR

    0

A netizen on Facebook shared that his Foodpanda delivery order was allegedly cancelled and he couldn’t get his money back because it was non-refundable.

He said that his order was cancelled because the food delivery rider allegedly couldn’t fit his PMA into his unit’s corridor, and that he allegedly stayed put at the lift landing without calling or texting him.

The OP said that he then went out to find the rider to take his food himself, but the rider insisted that his order was cancelled and reversed his PMA back into the lift with the netizen’s food.

    Here is what he said

F-g dog. He cancelled the order because his f-g ferrari is too big for my house corridor. So he stayed put at the lift landing. But no calls or msg from him at all.

So i got a notification saying my order was cancelled and It WAS NON REFUNDABLE. So i open the door and happened to see this f-g dog at the lift landing.

So i wore my shirt and went to him to wanna take my subway. And he told me it was cancelled.

I asked him why but he just ask me to go back and then reverse his f-g ferrari back to the lift. I was loss for words.

My paid food went off right in front of my eye. So i open the app again and i was told i gave the wrong address. But, i indeed gave the RIGHT ADDRESS and UNIT NUMBER.

He said it was the wrong address because his ferrari is too big for the corridor i guess. And also he wanna eat my subway. any rider in tiong bahru knows this f-g dog???

2 MEN ARRESTED FOR STEALING FROM MONEY CHANGER USING “SLEIGHT OF HAND” @ COLEMAN ST

𝗧𝗪𝗢 𝗠𝗘𝗡 𝗔𝗥𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗙𝗧 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗬 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗜𝗡𝗩𝗢𝗟𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗟𝗘𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗗

The Police have arrested two men, aged 45 and 54, for their suspected involvement in a case of theft in dwelling within eight hours of the report.

On 21 April 2023, the Police received a report on a case of theft at a money changer along Coleman Street, involving losses purportedly amounting to US$75,000.

Preliminary investigations revealed that between 18 April 2023 and 21 April 2023, the two men had purportedly made bona fide exchanges of Singapore Dollars (SGD) for United States Dollars (USD) on four occasions.

After gaining familiarity with the money changer, the two men asked the money changer to prepare US$75,000 in exchange for SGD on 20 April 2023.

On 21 April 2023 at around 4.30pm, the two men arrived at the money changer and asked to be handed over the US$75,000 on pretext of verifying the amount.

After verifying the bundles of cash in denominations of US$100 amounting to US$75,000, the 54-year-old man packed the bundles into plastic bags which were then placed into a large briefcase they had brought along.

When the briefcase could not fit through the gap at the counter to be returned to the money changer, the two men then allegedly pretended to remove the plastic bags containing the bundles from the briefcase to place them into a smaller black leather bag, which could fit through the gap.

The two men then claimed they would return with their passports and the SGD and left the black leather bag at the money changer.

The two men did not return after one hour. Feeling suspicious, the money changer opened the black leather bag and found three plastic bags containing a bundle each consisting of US$1 and US$100 notes, as well as fake Euro notes.

The money changer then realised that the two men had allegedly swapped the US$75,000 with a purportedly pre-packed mixture of USD and fake Euro notes.

Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of images from the Police cameras and CCTV footages, officers from the Central Police Division, Police Operations Command Centre, and Police Intelligence Department established the identities of the two men, who were foreign nationals.

Further checks revealed that the two men were onboard an aircraft due to take off from Changi Airport bound for Frankfurt, Germany.

Officers from the Airport Police Division responded swiftly and ordered a recall of the aircraft. Both men were immediately placed under arrest after being escorted from the aircraft.

US$74,600 in US$100 denominations were recovered from the two men and seized as case exhibits. Their electronic devices and clothes worn during the alleged offence were also seized. Police investigations are ongoing.

The two men will be charged in court on 23 April 2023 for theft in dwelling with common intention.

BMW DRIVER ARRESTED FOR DRINK DRIVING, HITS CAR & CRASHED INTO TREE @ JURONG WEST

    0

A 59-year-old male driver of a BMW was arrested on 21 April at about 11.15pm for suspected drink driving after hitting a Toyota, knocking down a lamppost and hitting the pavement along Jurong West Central 1, heading towards Boon Lay Avenue, according to Shin Min Daily News.

The BMW driver, along with the 50-year-old driver of the Toyota and the latter’s 60-year-old passenger, were all conveyed conscious to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the Singapore Police Force (SPF)

At the time of writing, police investigations into the incident are underway.

Shin Min Daily News reported that when they arrived at the scene, the totaled BMW was seen about 100 metres away from the Toyota that it had hit.

The Toyota was left stationary on the left side of the road near Block 688 Jurong West Central 1 with the front and back of the car severely damaged from the accident.

The alleged drunk driver of the BMW had purportedly hit the Toyota, before it lost control and knocked down a lamppost and ultimately ending up on the pavement, continuing on its “rampage” before crashing into a tree and stopping.

The airbag of the BMW was then activated after the crash, damaging the front of the BMW, and both cars were towed away from the scene at about 1 am yesterday.

A witness who saw what happened, told Shin Min that after crashing his car, the BMW driver got out of his vehicle and calmly called for an ambulance.

The passenger who was inside the Toyota that he hit, felt unwell after the collision and laid down on the road as passers-by tried to render aid to him.

A PHV sticker was also notably seen pasted on the window of the Toyota, indicating that the passenger of the Toyota might have been a PHV customer.

MAZDA DRIVER SWITCHED LANES WITHOUT CHECKING, TOOK OUT 4 MOTORCYCLISTS @ CTE

An accident involving 6 vehicles took place on the morning of 21 April along the Central Expressway (CTE) heading towards the city, with 4 motorcyclists being conveyed to the hospital.

The incident was captured on the dashcam of another car that was driving behind at the time.

A black Mazda was seen in the video switching lanes from the rightmost lane without due care, just as a row of about 4 motorcyclists were passing.

The Mazda then inexplicably knocked down all 4 motorcyclists, as well as hitting another car on its left.

The Singapore Police Force said that they were alerted to an accident that took place along the CTE heading towards AYE on 21 April at about 7.15 am, involving 2 cars and 4 motorcyclists.

They said that three male motorcyclists between the ages of 28 and 43 and a 25-year-old female motorcyclist were conveyed to the hospital conscious.

A 43 year old male car driver and a 33 year old female car driver are also assisting the police with their investigations, which are underway.

    Netizens’ comments

    1. Lesson for all rider, slow down and safe distance when heavy traffic
    2. Lesson for all drivers, other people use the road too, quit tailgating
    3. Very sad to say, lots of PH drivers rushing n driving without due care. Always be on alert n do lots of defensive driving to avoid accidents
    4. Yet more evidence that cars are the primary cause of injuries and deaths. PMDs and cyclists are angels in comparison.
    5. This one seems like no check mirror + no check blind spot. There was clearly no space to do any lane change, three bikes plus car were affected. I can infer that this driver is also not accustomed to driving in peak hour traffic.
    6. One person mistake & so many suffered !!!
    7. Blind Driver!! Damn!! Hope all the rider OK..

BF SNORE LIKE THUNDER, THEN ANGRY AT GF FOR WANTING TO SLEEP IN DIFFERENT ROOM

    0

My snoring BF (30M) guilts me (30F) about being light sleeper

TL;DR my bf is snoring terribly and instead of doing something about it or at least being benevolent about sleeping in separate bedrooms, he demands I go to meditation therapy so that my sleep is deeper and uninterrupted by snoring and we can share bedroom again.

So about last year my BF started to snore out of nothing, although he had never snored many years prior. He definitely hasn’t sleep apnea and is not obese, it’s just probably something known as “primary snoring” that can be caused by shape of tonsils, body morphology or sleeping position. The snoring is worse when he drinks, when it’s hot and as a severe allergic reaction when his nose is clogged.

First he wouldn’t believe me, but then he got this snoring app, where he saw firsthand that the decibels are out of the roof. He then tried some OTC remedies, but nothing worked. I was starting to get resentful, because I’d wake up every day at about 3-4 AM due to his snoring and couldn’t fall asleep afterwards until I got up for work at 6.00. Needless to say, my sleep was completely ruined as I was routinely getting only about 4-5 hours a night, which was affecting my work performance severely. Finally, seeing no other solution I moved to a spare room.

Now, the truth is my sleep is really quite light, I always have trouble falling asleep in unknown places, or occasionally (max once a month) when I’m overly stressed or excited (eg before a flight or when I have important meeting etc). I also get woken up by light or noise easily, even tho I’m sleeping with earplugs every night, I workout a lot to get physically tired and have very good sleep hygiene (no blue light, complete dark in the room etc). My bf says I’m overly sensitive and totally fussy and I should seek therapy to learn how to meditate and relax so that my sleep is deeper. The thing is I find this to be complete bull – people simply have some sleep patterns and it’s not possible I “make my sleep deeper” without prescription pills. It is what it is. I’ve been sleeping like this for my entire life, even when I’m not stressed or unrelaxed.

My bf is now angry with me, bcs I want to keep separate bedrooms for the sake of getting enough sleep for my normal daily functioning. I also don’t see this issue as a big deal – it’s normal that people snore, so it’s not like it’s his fault. I still love the guy, but I certainly love him more on days when I’m well rested. When we’re sleeping, it’s just that – sleeping. It’s not like we were professing love by sleeping in each other’s arms, when sleeping in one bed would come in handy. But he keeps saying sleeping separately damages our relationship.

He demands I move back to the bedroom and do something about my sleep pattern, so that I sleep soundly and don’t wake up every night at roughly the same time. I absolutely refuse to take benzos or hypnotics bcs I don’t need pills, I just need my quiet and dark, and all is ok. In the meantime, I find it outraging he guilts me about this but won’t go to doctor nor use any of the anti-snore devices, bcs they are “uncomfortable”. I told him his demands are absurd and I’m not paying for any meditation therapy, bcs I don’t see how it could make my sleep deeper.

Is my sleep pattern really so unusual? Any advice on how to deal with this?
