MAN SHARES HOW HE FROM GARANG GUNI TO OWNING A BUNGALOW BY SAVING MONEY

0

I am a saver and I use the delayed gratification method. I hope to inspire others to save.

I came from a humble background. My father distributes newspaper, holds a F&B job and another F&B job at night. He also picks up items like a garang uni and I enjoyed second hand clothes, furnitures etc since young.

As a result, I become a saver.

I made most of my decisions based on dollar and cents. Most of my clothes are recycled items. I choose food from the menu base on price.

Before I entered NUS, I worked part time and even on public holidays to get double pay.

I managed to go on exchange programme with grants and didnt pay anything as I receieved grant.

I also borrowed books from the library and photocopied them with my company’s photocopying machine when I was on the night shift.

I also sold my books and projects after every semester.

I managed to save and pay off my study loan before I graduated.

When I started the workforce, my starting pay was $2700. Then, the financial crisis hit and it dropped to $2500. I worked for under 3k pay for the next 3 years before I became self-employed.

As a self-employed, I earned about $10k to $15k a month. I saved and managed to get my BTO fully paid before I reach my MOP. I also paid for my car with cash. We chose the cheapest but new car.

When my wallet got fatter, I walked into branded shops and tried to buy one of the branded items. I looked at the price and felt disgusted, and I walked off. Paying such a high price for these items doesnt make sense for me.

I continued to stay with my in-laws.

When I become a parent, I got recycled items for my children. I almost didnt buy any clothes, same for myself.

Then in my mid-30s, I realised I have saved almost $1m, mostly in cash. With that, I purchased a freehold landed property.

I continued to stay with my in-laws.

I leased out the property, finding a tenant to finance my mortgage. I am now saving up for a second property.

Once I get my second property, I will move to my landed and find more assets to buy.

This is my story. From garang guni to landed. I hope everyone can start saving.

GUY CAME BACK FROM M’SIA WITH FOOD POISONING, BUT CAN’T CLAIM INSURANCE

0

A Facebook user, Shafiee Barahim, shared how he visited Cameron Highlands in Malaysia and had food poisoning after he returned to Singapore.

He said that he saw a doctor in Singapore but his insurance claim was rejected because he didn’t seek medical treatment before he came back to Singapore.

His insurance contract stated that the medical condition must have occurred during his trip and he must have sought treatment during the trip outside of Singapore in order to claim his insurance.

Here is what he said

On 14 July, I went to Cameron Highland and returned on 17 July.

Saw a Dr on 22 July due to stomach discomfort and was given an immediate jab as the Dr diagnosed it as bacterial gastroenteritis.

Made an online claim from Allianz travel insurance on 23 July. 5 days (28 July) after I made the claim online, they asked me for a medical report from the Dr.

I replied to the email by sharing with them that whenever I made a medical claim from FWD, MSIG etc, I was only required to provide a detail receipt as the clinic would include medicines dispensed and/or treatment given with the amount I paid for the consultation, medicines and/or treatment.

Now, ANOTHER 5 days (2 August) later after my reply to their email, they responded that my claim is rejected as there are terms and conditions in the insurance contract that ‘the medical condition must have occured DURING my trip AND I must have sought medical treatment during my trip OUTSIDE Singapore’.

In another words, if you are sick AFTER your overseas trip (even if you could prove that your sickness was due to the trip), Allianz may approve your medical claim if you have ALREADY SOUGHT medical treatment BEFORE youR return to Singapore.

Weird terms I must admit but this gives me an important lesson NOT to buy any insurance from Allianz again.

GIRL’S BF EARNS 9X MORE THAN HER, WANTS HIM TO SPEND 9X MORE ON HER TO “MATCH” CONTRIBUTION

0

Is my bf stingy or is he right?

I make 2k/month while my bf makes 18k/month.

The other day I told him he should be spending 9 times on me of what I spend on him. Like if I buy him a 5 dollar meal, he has to buy a 45 dollar one next time to match my contribution.

He strongly disagrees with this view as he said there are certain costs which don’t scale that way.

I think he is just being cheap. Shouldn’t money contribution be based on percentage to be fair? I think it’s only logical what. Like if I spent 200 dollars on him that’s 10% of my salary.

Even if he spends 900 dollars on me that’s more but it’s just 5% of his salary so to him it’s less what right?

Netizens’ comments

  • Since you like to be so calculative, next time when you all buy house you will get only 10% stake in it
  • How much money you want, no problem, limpeh burn for you.
  • Next time u buy six piece nugget for him
Make sure he buy 54 pcs for u ok
Remember to eat them all by yourself
  • That’s no right or wrong. You don’t have right to whatever he is making unless you work for him. How much percentage he wants to spend on you is his own prerogative.
  • I would rather he spend 5 dollar on you and the rest of the 40 dollar into future funds for major purchases such as houses/reno/wedding whatsoever. How much can you contribute to those? Basically none. You are just taking his money for granted at the present for your own wishes. Wake up your idea, sit down with your boyfriend and have a mature talk on money handling, both current and future, before he move on to another person. Dont expect to be spoon fed by your boyfriend. He isnt your ATM.

GUY WITH $2.5K SALARY CUTS DOWN ON SPENDING, HALF A YEAR GOT $10K SPARE CASH

0

A netizen shared how he drastically cuts down on his spending and saved the money that he didn’t use, and after half a year, had $10k in spare cash.

Here is what he said

“I work as a stall assistant at a food court and I make about $2,500 per month, and after deducting my CPF contribution of 20%, I bring home $2k.

I don’t have a wife or any children, so my expenses is solely me myself and I.

In the past, my spending was a little crazy for someone with an income like myself, I used to go drinking and partying with my friends all the time, every weekend.

On average, I spend about $1k plus on drinking per month, and the rest is split between buying my cigarettes, food, bills and etcetera.

I was living paycheck to paycheck when I realised that I had to cut down on my spending, because I was borrowing money far too often near the end of the money just to survive.

So I decided that if I were to cut down on my spending, it’s all or nothing.

I stopped drinking altogether, and every time my friends ask me out for drinks, I flat out reject them.

And just nice my mobile contract ($155/month) was expiring so I ported over to Circles life and got a SIM-only plan with a monthly bill of $20, with about 60gb of data.

Because i work at a food stall, I get to eat the food there for free so that’s 2/3 of my meals covered, and I limit myself to a max of $5 for the remaining meal.

I also quit smoking altogether, which is a whole other nightmare in itself – smokers should know how horrible and difficult it is to quit smoking.

On average, my monthly spending went from $2k per month to $250 per month, and the remaining amount of about $1.7k goes untouched.

I went from spending the entirety of my salary on nonsense, to saving almost all of it, and my health also improved from quitting drinking and smoking.

After about half a year, about 7 months, I have about $10.5k in savings.

I am planning to go on a short holiday and spend a little bit of my savings (budget maybe $2k), before I start saving again.

My goal is to have close to $100k in savings in 5 years, wish me luck!”

LANDLORD JAILED 10 WEEKS AFTER HE TOOK PHOTO OF FEMALE TENANT SHOWERING

0

Renting a home or a room in Singapore is common for many who are coming to Singapore to work, but sometimes many of the tenants are unlucky and faced a landlord that is considered a nightmare.

A 24-year-old woman became a victim of a crime after the landlord peeped at her showering and took a photo of her.

65-year-old man

According to Shin Min Daily News, The defendant is a 65-year-old Chinese man, and the 24-year-old victim girl is the defendant’s tenant. To protect her identity, a gag order has been issued and the judge ordered the media not to report any information that would reveal the girl’s identity, including the defendant’s name.

The incident took place at 8:10 pm on August 21, 2020, when the victim went to the kitchen bathroom to take a shower, she notice that the bucket in the bathroom was glowing.

After careful inspection, she found that there was a mobile phone hidden inside, and the recording function had been activated. After the victim got dressed, she questioned the landlord and a Police report was eventually made.

The defendant pleaded guilty in court and was sentenced to 10 weeks in jail.

The offence of insulting the modesty of a woman carries an imprisonment term of up to one year, or a fine, or both.

Here are what netizens think:

  • 65-year-old grandpa is still very powerful
  • This is very disrespectful to women.
  • If I were the victim, I will ask the judge to reveal the true face of this pervert, or I will photograph his face and put it on social media. Just because these scumbags know their real identities will be protected, this kind of thing happens all the time
  • He deserves the rotan punishment.
  • Isn’t the sentence too light?
  • The internet is very powerful, if want watch this kind of thing no need do this kind of thing, just go surf the net.

JOBLESS WOMAN REPLIED TO MORE THAN 500 JOB POSTINGS, ONLY 1 REPLIED

0

A netizen shared how she lost her job more than 2 months ago and is currently struggling to find a new job, applying for hundreds of job listings with little to no replies.

Here is what she said

“I used to work as an accountant with a salary of about $4k plus before I was let go by my company, and since then I have been sending my resume to companies trying to get a new job.

I think my resume is pretty well written, it is the same one that I used to get my accounting job many years ago and details my many experiences and roles in my career.

For context purposes, I am 27 years old and have remained loyal to my current (now former) company, so my resume is not really illustrious.

And I also only have a polytechnic diploma.

But anyway back to my job hunt, it seems that most of the jobs that I see online are looking for people with degrees and experience in the related field.

I don’t have a degree but I do have experience, but the employers appear to be blind to that fact.

I have sent hundreds and hundreds of emails and job applications, about 500 plus by now, and only ONE employer has replied.

That one reply invited me for a job interview, which I went about 2 weeks ago and have gotten no update from them, so I assume they have someone else in mind already.

This is very demoralising, and I just wanna ask, anyone has any ideas or tips to make me stand out from other job applicants?”

MAN PRETENDS TO BE POOR SO HE DOESN’T HAVE TO MARRY HIS GIRLFRIEND

0

I’m with my girlfriend for 3 years. She’s been bugging me to marry her and it’s really starting to stress me out.

I didn’t tell her I actually have 6 figure savings accumulated from my deceased father’s will on top of my own assets and let her think I’m a pauper. She even gave me money once when she thought my family finances were tight but I rejected it.

A part of me decided she is the one after she did that.

My mother told me to never flaunt our wealth so as not to attract the wrong people so I guess I start to feel funny about money since young. We mostly go to hawkers and only visit restaurants when there is a special occasion like birthdays or Christmas.

Our dates are usually very low costs. I like that when the weather permits, we have the habit of alighting earlier from the train or bus and spend more time walking together and talking to reach our destination.

I lied to her that we can’t afford a flat yet and she showed hand me her savings and say she can and kept asking me not to waste her time in a joking way. Her family is pretty well to do. Her dad even gifted her a car when she got promoted but she sold it as she’s not confident driving.

The problem I have with my GF may be insignificant to some couples. I don’t really have any major red flags or issues about her. Even if she’s not my gf, I would think of her as a great person to have around. I know other men will find her very eligible given her looks, personality and family background. My mother loves her and already considers her a daughter-in-law. But I have a but. I’m not ready. We are in our late 20s.

How do you become ready?

I’m so in love with her but I just couldn’t make myself get down on one knee and ask for her hand in marriage.

Here are what netizens think:

  • You just need competition. Once the danger of losing her becomes very real then u will treasure her more.Let her go out and work and be in the company of guys who are waiting to flaunt their wealth and generosity to her. U will become better after losing her.
  • It is a typical scenario. When you have her, you don’t treasure her. When you lose her, then you will regret why you never treasure her. She is way more mature than you. Her future have you but your future do not have her. Let her go. You can’t even be truthful to her when it comes to money.
  • Please do a good deed and break up with her. She deserves better. It’s one thing to not tell her your savings but another to lie about being a pauper. She sounds like a nice girl and deserves someone who is honest with her. I hope she dumps you soon

SALARY TOO HIGH FOR HOUSING GRANT BUT NOT ENOUGH TO AFFORD CONDO, STUCKED

I’m a stay home mum in my mid-30s, and my husband’s income is about $12k, which I consider substantial. Being pragmatic and frugal by nature allows us to sustain this single-income lifestyle where I can stay home w the kid. We don’t need alot of things to be happy and so don’t see a need to chase material things that add to stress.

We currently stay in a 3-room HDB and are moving to 5 rooms- since baby #2 is coming in Oct, so we need more bedrooms.

At the start of our house-hunting journey, I honestly felt like you too! Because our income was not low, we didn’t qualify for a subsidy.

Private Housing

We’re also not well off enough to afford private housing comfortably without stressing about monthly instalments. Private housing is out of the qn for us in the foreseeable years because I don’t want to put extra stress on my husband and we also see no need to stay private. I think it’s the inside of the house that matters, not the outside, since we spend most of the time at home, not in the function room or swimming pool.

When choosing our new 5rm resale flat, our key considerations were location, to be close to extended family. But that meant we had to continue to stay in mature estate where HDB prices are crazy. 5rm or EA flats around the area is at least $700-$800k onwards.

Both of us didn’t want to pay this much for a 99yr lease and not mentioning the loan. As we are also sceptical how much we’ll be able to sell it for in future.

So to combat this, we looked at older units and low floor. It helped that my husband prefers low floors, and I liked that the older unit are bigger.

After more than 15 viewings, and months scrolling on PropertyGuru, we finally found a flat from the 1970s, 5rm, mature estate, low floor, at less than $600k, with a greenery view on the balcony.

I think it’s entirely possible to find something comfortable within your budget so that u don’t have to postpone plans just to save up for that ideal property at sky-high prices.. You just have to go for many many viewings, so that u can find something that’s acceptable to both of u.

Housing Versus Marriage

If you would like advice, don’t let housing or lack of push back your marriage plans. My big regret is not having kids earlier. I had my first baby at 33. Second one is coming in a few months at 35. I feel tired and old already.. But we still want to try for baby #3, as my husband and I are both only children so we know it gets lonely.

My husband and I got married in our late 20s. At that time he was still studying, but we didn’t want to wait for BTO and too broke to buy resale. So we rented a 1 bedroom condo at $1.5k per month, which was very affordable. But that was the rental market years ago, i don’t know what it is like now. Maybe u can consider renting a cheap / affordable place in the meantime to start settling down.. After 1yr rental, my husband graduated and we bought our first 3rm resale flat and have stayed here till now.

We also didn’t have a lavish wedding/proposal/diamond ring. We don’t see the need for all these. So it also helped to save money and put it into longer term things..

However, I do have to agree with u about renovation costs! Now that I’m embarking on the reno journey myself, prices are crazy.

Because our new flat is so old, we really can’t keep anything. It needs a complete redo of floor tiles, electrical, lighting, toilets, kitchen.. Really everything. We’re not even looking at elaborate carpentry or anything very fancy, our 3 quotes have come back ranging from $75k- $120k. And this is just renovation cost, not including appliances, aircon and furniture!

Expensive Renovation Quotes

I find this really unbelievable. I’m still persevering to find more reasonable quotes. I will not spend $100k on reno, it’s crazy. I think $60k is probably our max, but we haven’t found that yet, still working on it…

Good luck to you on your house hunting. Don’t give up on HDB, not everything is $1mil.. $1mil is usually for penthouse unit but do you really need that to be happy? Take time to find, you’ll surely find something you both like.

Also, your first house likely won’t be your last. So don’t need to go all the way to $1mil immediately. Because it’s the first time you will be staying on your own, there’s alot of things you will need to experience to know if you will actually like it.. So no need to max out on your first home yet.

Like for us, we were so noob choosing our first hdb, we only went to view in the night after work. So we didn’t know it was so dark. It doesn’t have natural light coming in as it is blocked by opposite block and is a corridor unit so I even have to turn on lights in the day!

But we’ll chalk it down to first-timer mistake. So for all our subsequent houses, we know clearly what we want / can live with and what we absolutely cannot and we’re able to make better decisions..

One last thought, maybe don’t go private la, i imagine it must be very stressful to carry such a big loan on your shoulders at this early stage, esp if u say both of you have not much savings yet . But that’s just me.

PRC FOOD BLOGGER FACING JAIL FOR EATING ENDANGERED GREAT WHITE SHARK

0

A few days ago, a China Internet celebrity food blogger was on the hot search for cooking sharks.

On the 31st, the police confirmed that the shark in the video was indeed a great white shark), which is a second-class national-protected animal. The food blogger could face a jail sentence of up to 5 years.

In a video, the Food blogger said: “Today, I’m going to take a 100-pound giant farmed shark home to see my aunt…”

In the video, the food blogger named “Tizi” (提子) first came to the door of a seafood shop with a large package and she placed a shark into the package, attracting many onlookers.

Afterwards, “Tizi” brought the sharks back home for cutting and making it into a spicy dish and also grilled the shark meat.

During the cooking process, she put in a lot of oil, peppers and other seasonings, and finally ended with everyone eating the shark meat.

The upper left corner of the video is marked with the words “artificial bred and edible”.

Animal Protection

The video caused an uproar on the Internet. Some popular science bloggers pointed out that this shark is an internationally endangered wild animal, the great white shark, which is a second-class national protected animal.

She responded to the media repeatedly and confirmed with the seller that the source of sharks is regular shark and not an endangered animal.

However, the police in Nanchong, Sichuan confirmed that the shark in the video of the Internet celebrity “Tizi” is indeed a great white shark), and the case is undergoing investigations.

According to a lawyer at Beijing he said that the great white shark is a second-class protected wild animal in the “National Key Protected Wildlife List”. and added that the purchase has violated the provisions of Article 341 of the “Criminal Law”, suspected of endangering precious and endangered wild animals, or will face a penalty of imprisonment of not more than five years.
