Hi, I’ve worked in kitchens for 3+ years so far, and I would hear all sorts of customer encounters from my service staff colleagues that demoralises us, leaving us thinking, why are these guests like that? So i’m sharing some information from our side in hopes that you might empathize more with us.

If you make a reservation at a busy restaurant (not cafe), and you are late even exceeding grace period, not picking up calls/answering texts, the table is going to someone else that walks in (without reservation). Please dont make a fuss and treating us like we owe you a living.

If you decide to walk-in a restaurant without reservation, the host tells you we’re full, but you see empty tables around, they are reserved for guests that are coming ~ 10-15mins later. Its not we don’t want to let you sit, so please dont insinuate that we are dumb or dislike you to refuse you entry.

If you want your food to be served all at the same time (like in hell’s kitchen) actually for most restaurants it can be done, but if its at the lower end (saizeriya, swensens, etc), manage your expectations. Your pasta is probably gonna arrive 15 mins earlier than your baked mac & cheese in casual lower-end places. Service there may be different than more expensive places as these are the places entry-level staffs usually work at. Its common to see people complaining about bad service there but hey, you get what you pay for.

If you order beef medium-well / well done, you WILL have slightly longer waiting time than for usual dishes, because, well, it takes a longer time to hit that temperature.

If you want to split the bill, okay lah if your table 4 pax. But if your office group of 15 pax wants to split the bill, and 15 credit cards comes out, just know its gonna take LONG for service staffs to split, pls dont complain when. It would be easier if you guys just settle via paynow to each other, and let us bill 1 card instead.

Some restaurants give tap water for free, some charge for it, some only have sparkling/still water. So if you say, “What kind of restaurant doesn’t serve ____”, kindly know that we dont make the rules, someone else does.

Some of us just have that “resting b- face” and its not that we dislike serving you, that’s just how we look naturally, so please don’t be rude to us unprovoked.

So I hope you guys have some understanding of what we face on a daily basis, and please treat F&B staffs with kindness. You happy, i happy, everyone happy.

Hate when my boyfriend spends money on me

Even before we started dating, I always paid for him (food when we had lunch, ice cream etc) and even now I pay for everything. He doesn’t have a job at the moment which is fine by me because I love buying him things, especially food.

The issue is that I’m going to university and will be working a lot less. In the beginning of our relationship I told him he could pay for dates after I start school (I took a gap year and I wanted work to jobs for fun and extra money but now I’ll have to give that all up for school)

However now I don’t even like the idea of him doing that. I don’t want him to spend money on me, at all. I love spending money on him and even have some expensive gifts in mind but the idea of him spending a cent on me just makes me uncomfortable.

I don’t even want a birthday gift from him. Whenever he buys me food, I always pay him back, even if it’s shared between us.

I don’t even feel okay with him spending too much on a ring for me if our relationship gets that far. If he bought some cheap $2 ring from the flea market I’d be happy with that.

I don’t know why I’m like this but I’ve always been this way.

Matched with this guy on Bumble. Had a really good time texting him, decided to meet him on a Friday night the following week. While we were texting, we were talking all day and night. He was so fun to chat with. We were supposed to meet at 6pm on Friday but he texted me at about 4 saying his work was holding him back, so he pushed the date back to 8pm. He asked me if I drank and I said no, so he proceeded to order a whole bottle of wine for himself. The entire date conversation was a mess. He talked about his ex, about how good he was with alcohol (alcoholism go brrrr), about how “bad a-” he is. Total cringe fest. He also called the waitress a b- (tbf she did act rather standoffish but cmon a b-?).

After dinner, he grabbed the unfinished bottle and walked out. We went for a walk and he was still completely talking about himself. We went to sit on a bench, and he continued chugging from the bottle. He took out his vape, took a puff AND BLEW IT IN MY FACE. Then he proceeded to take a work call for 15 min while I sat there like a buffoon, next to his bottle of wine.

He asked if we could go for dessert after and I was like nah man. I can’t do this, I have to get home. He came in for a kiss, I turned it into an awkward side hug and left. I went home and deleted bumble all together because of this experience. 10/10 wouldn’t recommend this guy.

• I’m a uni student but have been doing Grab Food delivery for extra pocket money for the last year or so. From what I gather from other riders including myself, you could say the number of riders who enjoy working in the rain vs not is split pretty much 50-50.

I personally prefer working in the rain because we tend to have higher pay (aka “surge fees”), more people tend to order Grab Food when it’s raining heavily so more orders for us, less pedestrians on the roads so it’s easier for us to ride safely, rain is very cooling and I don’t feel as tired, etc.

This might be a surprise to some but I actually prefer heavier rain (more orders for me + empty roads). The only time when poor weather conditions becomes an issue for me is when there’s thunder + lightning involved which forces me to seek shelter and essentially on a mandatory break until the weather improves.

• I work DTBM (Downtown Bukit Merah), usually need to decide between working in the rain for incentive or rest haha

But the ones that rly make me a headache are those condo ppl that take 102827291 hours to answer the intercom, when I’m like cold and all.

• I seldom order Grab Food delivery to begin with, and I’ve probably ordered in heavy rain only once or twice. I do recall tipping them. Totally get you and I would feel for the riders too. It’s not just a matter of greater discomfort, but also a higher risk of getting into accidents since it’s more slippery.

I see paying the delivery fee and empathy for the rider as two separate issues. Just because we pay the delivery fee doesn’t mean that we cannot also empathise with them or therefore choose to tip them. They don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Grab Food is a difficult job and gratitude, especially if expressed with a kind word or a tip (or both), can at least help to make their day a bit better. Sure, it’s the grab delivery company’s duty to ensure the well-being and compensation of the riders, but we complain all the time about our culture being not particularly friendly, and while we certainly don’t owe the riders anything, maybe we can start to make things a bit better by being a bit less stingy with our empathy, goodwill, and money.

A guy shared a story of how he thought of a 4D investment method which he said that if lucky he would be making money every other draw.

He tried his hand on this investment method for a few months and ended up losing his entire life savings.

Here is the story

“I was at a stage of my life were I wanted to get rich quickly without doing much and wanted to try my hand at some investments just like those investment gurus.

However, after watching these so called ‘gurus’ teach people about investments, I realised that the only money that they were probably making from their investments came from making these kind of tutorial videos to teach people how to invest.

Hence, I decided to think of how to make money from other means and one day came out with a 4D investment ‘method’.

The investment method was really easy, every draw, I would just pick a number from 0-9 and buy 1000 numbers.

For instance, if I choose the number 8 for this draw, then I would buy 1000 numbers starting from 8000 – 8999 for that draw.

The plan was simple and straight forward, I would spend $1 big on each of these 1000 numbers which will make my total investment come up to $1000.

Then, I would await for the 4D results to see how many numbers that start with the number that I chose opened up.

I just had to hope that the number which I chose would hit the first prize and I would be able to profit from my investment.

A $1 big would mean that I strike $2000, which effectively covers my $1000 investment and gives me a $1000 profit.

Any other prizes that open with the number I had chosen would be the ‘bonuses’ that I receive from this investment.

I got carried away after I profited from this investment for a few times and started to increase my bets to $2 big per draw, which increased my investment into $2000 per draw.

Well, lady luck then decided not to shine on me anymore and I soon began to suffer losses from these investments.

As I fell deeper, I threw in more money on these investments till I lost all my life savings.”

A guy took to social media to voice out his displeasure at an Aircon Serviceman who we know as ‘Ah Lau’ based on the screenshots that was uploaded to social media.

This was after the Aircon serviceman asked the man to top up money for some extra items and went missing in action for a while.

“I ordered an Aircon service after seeing an ad by an Aircon company online which offered their aircon services at a price cheaper than the market rate.

When the Aircon serviceman, ‘Ah Lau’ came to my house to do the work, he mentioned that the condition of my current pipes is not that good anymore and recommended me some premium aircon pipes made of copper, of course at a premium price.

He went on and on about how good these pipes are and that changing to them will effectively help me save money in the long run.

Convinced by his talks and the problem was not with the compressor, I agreed and paid him money for him to install these premium aircon copper pipes.

However, less than a week after the aircon servicing, the pipes started to leak and I called ‘Ah Lau’ to come back to see what is the issue and he replied to me saying that he will get back to me.

After a few days had passed, I contacted him again and he kup-ed my phone call, blocked me and went MIA for a while.

I then decided to contact him via his Whatsapp until he replied, which he eventually did but with a lot of profanities and he scolded me as well.

In his Whatsapp messages, he told me not to ‘KPKB’ till as if my father and mother is dead, saying that he told me before that I have to wait for the aircon pipes means have to wait.

He even said unnecessary things like my brain got water and to me to continue waiting, scolding ‘NB’ and asking me if I thought I was the only customer in SG.”
