Residents in Jurong West Street 61 are fuming, as one of the units in that particular block has seen a steady stream of men who flock there. Residents said that for the last one year, the rented unit has housed a number of foreign women, and some were shocked to learn that it operates as a brothel.

Despite a number of raids in the area, such brothels keep returning, attracted by low rents and the belief that they are less likely to be detected there. Residents have given feedback to the relevant authorities that more enforcement in the area is needed, as there are also now more reports of brothels operating out from heartland HDB blocks, and not only in the Jurong West one.

Ms Vanessa Ho, director of sex workers’ rights group Project X, believes increased police raids on unlicensed brothels in Geylang could have resulted in businesses moving to public housing. “We know a handful of sex workers who work out of HDB flats, and I estimate that there must be hundreds of such brothels,” she said.

Enforcement action since January shows at least 82 women have been arrested for suspected involvement in vice activities within residential areas and units.

A 58-year-old man was sentenced to a jail term of eight weeks for causing a cat to suffer serious head and lung injuries, resulting in its death. Ow Ah Lon, who is a cab driver by trade, was sentenced in court yesterday (Oct 4).

In a press release, the AVA said that they were alerted to an alleged animal cruelty case at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 on Mar 14 this year. Ow had admitted to throwing a stray cat on the floor before throwing it down a rubbish cute from his residence.

After conducting a post-mortem on the cat’s carcass, it was revealed that the cat suffered an external traumatic incident (blunt force trauma mainly directed at the cranium of the cat), which caused its death.

According to media reports, Ow was furious when he returned home from work one day and found cat feaces and urine on his mattress. On Mar 14, he heard a cat meowing and saw the stray cat run out from the television console in his living room before hiding below a metal rack in his kitchen. He threw the cat onto the floor once before it ran to hide in the kitchen toilet. After it ran out again, he caught it by its hind legs.

However, the cat turned around and bit the accused’s right hand. Out of fear, the accused then threw the cat onto the floor again,” said Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority prosecutor Yap Teck Chuan. He then picked up the cat and threw it into the rubbish chute before leaving his home to buy medicine for his injuries.

A 44 year-old teacher, Mr Daniel Wong Mun Meng, was arrested and charged for paying for sex with his Vietnamese masseuse after he handed her a counterfeit note after doing the deed.

The masseuse was caught after she tried to pay for some goods at a supermarket later that day. Police investigations led them back to Wong, who was arrested at his workplace in Bukit Batok Secondary School.

During the trial, Wong claimed that he had made the fake currency notes of the same serial number using his home printer and an ordinary A4 sized paper to use as a teaching tool during his maths lessons. He claimed that his students had not seen a $100 note before and wanted to use it to “excite” his students during his class.

Wong later left the 2 notes in his wallet, which he brought to Orchard Towers on 3 August 2015. He met Ms Nguyen Nhu Trang and had sex with her at a Fragrance Hotel branch in Balestier Road between 2.45AM and 3.45AM.

Although Wong testified that he had sex with the woman after a massage, Ms Trang took to the stand and claimed that she only gave him an oil massage.

After handing her the fake notes, Wong dropped Ms Trang off and drove off. However, he claims he realized his mistake and drove back to find her but could not locate or call her.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has told reporters that Wong was suspended from duty since December 2015.

“MOE takes a serious view of educator misconduct and will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against those who fail to adhere to our standards of conduct and discipline.”

Among the 58 people that were arrested, there was a 17-year-old that was arrested for illegal gambling.
