The Singapore police released figures showing a decrease in the overall crime rate in Singapore, with theft and housebreaking reaching a 36-year low in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Unlicensed money-lending harassment and outrage of modesty fell, with the police attributing this decrease to the movement restrictions imposed by the governemnt during the circuit breaker period.
It is also worth noting that Singapore ranked first in the Gallup’s 2020 Global Law and Order report for the seventh consecutive year, with 97% of residents saying they felt safe walking home alone in their neighbourhood at night.
However, Senior assistant commisioner of the police, How Kwang Hee noted that while Singapore’s streets and homes remain safe, online scam cases continue to increase in line with the global trend.
