Argentina declared yesterday (20 December) a public holiday for the whole country to celebrate the football team’s world cup victory.

Reuters reported that the national team greeted their fans at the Obelisk in Buenos Aires, which is a historic monument in Argentina.

Thousands of people had already begun flocking to the area en masse on 18 December after the Argentines’ victory against France in the final.

The national team returned home on the morning of 20 December, as hundreds of thousands of people gathered to welcome their national heroes home.

Netizens shared photos of the insane crowd size, with online estimates of the number of people present is about 4 million people in celebration.

Fans also crowded the national team bus as it slowly cruised around the streets in an open-top parade, and the crowds showed no signs of abating even at 4 am.

WOMAN FOUND CHICK ABANDONED IN THE LIFT AT YISHUN

A woman who was on her way to work found an abandoned animal and said she had no idea how long the chick has been inside the lift.

She took it home for safekeeping for the time being.

The woman said:

Found this baby inside my lift on my way out to work. Someone abandoned it and put in a box. I don’t know how long the chic been up and down inside the lift.

I took it up to my home. Told my kids to keep it safe for time being.

Now, what should I do with it. I can’t keep it cause I have cats.

Please advise.

So cute and so tiny. I don’t understand why they abandoned it just like that.

Here are what netizens think:

  • It needs something warm to snuggle under… like even just the cloth ends of a new mop. Reminds them of snuggling under their mum.
  • Omg…so cute… actually there won’t really be any issues in caring for ot eventho u hv cats tho.. just keep it in a warm and well ventilated box or in my case, a cat carrier.. hv the food and water bowls inside it.. take it out(supervised or coz)so that it could still be active..I actually hold it close to my cats in a bid to “introduce” them.. and thank god..after abt 2 weeks, my cats just buat bodoh when the chick plays ard outside its carrier..only downside is, be ready for chirping noises…
  • Omg so cute…dunno when one will appear at my lift lol…anyway thanks for adopting n caring for this small baby
  • Actually I’m wondering those who said it’s cute and wanna make it a pet , cos it’s baby chick… End of the day, the cute size and chirp is only for few weeks more only. After that it’s full size and the chirps ain’t no cute chirps anymore. Hope others especially parents see the bigger picture and not be tempted to your kids request; to think thrice b4 allowing your young kids to get cute pet which will outgrow very fast. That’s the lead cause of abandonment.

EMPLOYER WHO PUNISHED MAID BY MAKING HER SLAP HERSELF, EXPOSED BY HER OWN CCTV

0

63-year-old Ang Poh Geok was sentenced to 1-month imprisonment after pleading guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt to her maid, Zin Ei Phyu.

Ang had accused the maid of failing to pack some bags properly and made the 25-year-old slap herself three times.

The incident happened on 6 October 2020 when the two of them were alone at Ang’s home in Edgefield Plains.

Ang scolded the maid for not packing the bags satisfactorily, and the maid then repacked the bags silently, but Ang was still not happy.

She then ordered the maid to slap herself, to which the latter then complied.

Unsatisfied with the slap, Ang told the maid to slap herself again which the victim complied with the second and third times.

Ang then mocked the victim and told her to say that she “got no brain” because “God keep already,” and she finally stopped after the maid repeated the words that she was told to say.

The whole incident was captured on CCTV at the unit, which was played in court yesterday (20 December).

The maid felt pain but didn’t seek attention because she was afraid of reprisals, and thus she kept it to herself.

The truth came to light when a concerned neighbour alerted the police to the maid being scolded every day, and when officers visited Ang’s home the next day, they found the maid with tears in her eyes and looking scared.

Ang was then questioned by the police and she then admitted to scolding the victim regularly.

The police assessed that the maid’s safety would be at risk if Ang’s conduct escalated, and they then told And that they would be arranging to take the victim away from the unit.

And then repeatedly challenged the police’s authority to take the maid away.

The police then escorted the maid away from the unit while making arrangements for her to stay somewhere else, as the maid’s agent was uncontactable at the time.

MAN SENT PHOTOS OF HIS GF SHOWERING TO HER HUSBAND & FRIENDS, JAILED 21 MONTHS

A 39-year-old man was sentenced to 21 months and 15 weeks imprisonment on 20 December after pleading guilty to 3 charges of distributing voyeuristic images and threatening to distribute intimate photos, he also had 2 other charges being considered during his sentencing.

The man cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim.

He had taken screenshots of his girlfriend (who was cheating on her husband with him) in the shower and sent the photos to her husband and friends.

What happened?

Channel NewsAsia reported that the man was in a relationship with the victim from July 2918 to January 2021, and they video-called each other near the end of their relationship while the woman was in the shower.

The man then took screenshots of the woman’s bare body without her knowledge.

Their relationship then soured in January 2021 and he threatened to send the photos to others if she left him; they later broke up that month but the man wanted to get back together with her, but the victim refused to speak to him.

The man then messaged her relatives and close friends, as well as sent her intimate photos to her husband as well as two other friends.

He messaged them on Facebook and told them to make the victim reply to him, or he would distribute the photos online.

The victim’s husband and two friends refused to comply with the man’s demands and he then created 5 fake Facebook accounts to get the victim to speak to him.

One of the accounts used the victim’s photo as the profile picture in an attempt to trick the victim’s family and friends into accepting the friend request.

On 4 May 2021, the man then used the account and posted photos of the victim, including her with and without any clothes on, using emojis to cover her private parts.

The victim lodged a police report on 9 May 2021.

MOM – EMPLOYMENT RATE IN S’PORE HAS INCREASED FOR “2ND CONSECUTIVE YEAR”

0

1. The resident labour force continued to see improvements in 2022 compared to a year ago. Unemployment rate fell for workers across occupational groups. A larger proportion of the population was engaged in work as the employment rate rose. Year-on-year real income grew notwithstanding high inflation. In particular, income growth for lower-wage workers was higher than the median, and the 20th percentile (P20) to median (P50) income ratio rose to its highest since 2004. Indicators on labour under-utilisation have also improved to their pre-COVID levels.

2. These are key findings from the Advance Release of the Labour Force In Singapore 2022, an annual release by the Manpower Research and Statistics Department of the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).1 The report draws on data from the mid-year Comprehensive Labour Force Survey.

Main Findings

A larger proportion of the resident population was engaged in work

3. The employment rate for residents aged 15 and over rose for the second consecutive year to reach 67.5% in 2022, higher than the pre-COVID rate in 2019 by 2.3%-points. If ranked against Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries on overall employment rate, Singapore would place third.

Share of residents in PMET roles has increased

4. In terms of job profile, PMETs (Professionals, Managers, Executives, and Technicians) made up 64% of all employed residents in 2022, an increase from 62% in 2021. The higher share reflects a highly educated workforce and sustained employment growth in sectors such as Information & CommunicationsFinancial & Insurance and Professional Services.

Unemployment rate fell for workers across occupations

5. The unemployment rate fell over the year, from 3.4% to 2.6% for PMETs and from 5.1% to 4.4% for non-PMETs.2 The long-term unemployment rate3 also decreased to around pre-COVID levels for both PMETs (0.8% to 0.5%) and non-PMETs (0.9% to 0.7%).

Other indicators on labour under-utilisation have also improved to pre-COVID levels

6. The number and incidence of discouraged workers4 continued to decrease from 11,600 or 0.5% of the resident labour force in 2021, to 8,900 or 0.4% in 2022, reflecting a strong recovery from the height of the pandemic in 2020.

7. Alongside improvements in job search outcomes, the resident time-related under-employment rate declined to pre-COVID levels, at 3.0% in 2022. Most groups experienced improvements, including those who were more affected at the height of the pandemic – workers aged 60 and over as well as those with below secondary qualifications. With the economic recovery, the scale-back in COVID-related temporary jobs, and the tight labour market, the proportion of employees in non-permanent employment also fell back to pre-COVID levels (11%).

Income growth held up well despite high inflation

8. Real median income growth improved from 0.9% in 2021 to 2.1% in 2022, as strong nominal income growth outstripped higher inflation. However, real median income growth in 2022 was still lower than that in the years preceding the pandemic (2014-2019: 3.8% p.a.), when inflation was lower.

9. Lower-wage workers saw stronger income growth than the median worker, supported by tripartite initiatives such as the Progressive Wage Model (PWM) which are aimed at uplifting lower-wage workers. Real income for the 20th percentile worker grew by 4.8% in 2022, faster than the previous year (4.4%) as well as the pre-COVID years (2014-2019: 4.4% p.a.). With this, the P20 to P50 income ratio rose from 0.53 in 2021 to 0.55 in 2022, the highest since 2004.

Conclusion

10. The broad-based improvement in resident labour force performance reflects the continued economic recovery and the gradual normalisation of business and social activities. Amid the evolving economic environment, we encourage employers and workers to make full use of government programmes to adapt and accelerate the pace of transformation. This will enable us to develop our workers and build a more competitive and resilient workforce, while ensuring that wage growth is sustainable and supported by productivity growth.

  1. Employers can tap on the Support for Job Redesign under Productivity Solutions Grant (PSG-JR), to make their jobs more productive and attractive to jobseekers. Workforce Singapore (WSG) also offers Job Redesign Reskilling Programmes to support employers in upskilling existing employees to take on enhanced job roles.
  2. The SGUnited Mid-Career Pathways Programme offers attachment opportunities for mid-career jobseekers, with allowances of up to $3,800 per month. This allows employers to better assess the job-fit of mature jobseekers, while providing them an opportunity to undergo training and widen their professional networks.
  3. Jobseekers who require career matching services can approach WSG and NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute, including through any of the 24 SGUnited Jobs & Skills Centres across the country.

11. The Government will continue to build on tripartite efforts to uplift lower-wage workers.

  1. These include new Progressive Wage moves introduced since 1 September 2022, namely the new Local Qualifying Salary (LQS) requirement, and the introduction of PWM for retail workers as well as for in-house cleaners, security officers and landscape workers. More lower-wage workers will also benefit from the Food Services PWM and Occupational PWM for administrators and drivers to be implemented from March 2023.
  2. The Government is also co-funding the wage increases given to lower-wage workers through the Progressive Wage Credit Scheme, for five years from 2022 to 2026. Employers are urged to use this period of support from the Government to accelerate firm-level productivity improvements, so that wage increases remain sustainable in the long run.

FOOTNOTE

  1. The data pertain to the resident population for the period of June each year, comprising Singapore citizens and permanent residents. The final report of the Labour Force in Singapore 2022 will be released in January 2023. Data for previous editions of the Labour Force in Singapore are available online on the Ministry of Manpower’s Research and Statistics Department website at http://stats.mom.gov.sg/Pages/Home.aspx. Details on the survey methodology as well as the concepts and definitions are in the “Factsheet on Comprehensive Labour Force Survey” appended with this press release.
  2. This refers to unemployment rates for residents who were previously employed in PMET and non-PMET occupations. The PMET and non-PMET unemployment rates are based on data as of June each year. As they are non-seasonally adjusted, they should not be compared with the seasonally adjusted unemployment rates that are published on a higher frequency.
  3. This is defined as the percentage of persons aged 15 years and over who have been unemployed for 25 weeks or more, to the labour force.
  4. This refers to persons outside the labour force who are not actively looking for a job because they believe their job search would not yield results.

WOMAN CANCELLED FOODPANDA ORDER, TOLD THAT SHE CAN’T GET REFUND AS FOOD IS READY

0

Foodpanda customer service is terrible. I called to cancel my order cos the food is not ready by the stipulated time for pickup.

The entire restaurant is overwhelmed. Foodpanda repeatedly put me on hold for 2-3mins each time, and claimed they needed to check with the restaurant. And after 8mins, foodpanda told le food is ready for collection.

When i reminded them that i already asked to cancel the order and have the money refunded, they told me they can cancel the order BUT cannot refund me.

Reason is the food is ready! Come on, you took 8mins to check, obviously the food will turn ready. I asked the customer recovery team yo called me back.

They promised to do so within 2-3 hrs but never materialised. It has been 5 days and i am still waiting.

Over the past five days, i tried to resurface the case to via their Chat, and they pull the same trick – put me on hold, then claim the case has been escalated and someone will call me soon.

When press further, they just abruptly ended the chat. Very bad service. Very dishonest way of doing business.

[Updates] The service recovery team finally emailed and called me today. They had given me full refund.

JAY CHOU’S CONCERT ORGANISER “SORRY” FOR LIGHTSTICKS THAT WERE PEELING & NOT WORKING

0

Fans of Jay Chou were up in arms regarding the subpar quality of his latest concert in Singapore on 17 and 18 December.

Fans complained about Chou not singing his own songs and getting other guest singers to sing his songs, while others complained about the mediocre vocal quality of the performances.

A number of fans complained about the lightsticks that were distributed during the concert, highlighting how the lightsticks were dirty and peeling off, and that they didn’t work as they were running out of battery.

The organiser of the concert, G.H.Y Culture and Media, then issued a statement apologising for the lightsticks that didn’t meet the audience’s expectations.

Here is what they said

Dear Fans,

We thank you for the wonderful support during the Jay Chou Carnival Singapore Concert!

We hear your feedback regarding the complimentary lightsticks that were given out at the concert and we are sorry that these lightsticks did not come up to your expectations.

These lightsticks have not been recycled from the last concert in 2020 and “20” reflected in the Carnival emblem refers to Jay’s 20 over years of making music culminating in the Carnival themed concert world tour for his fans.

As this is also Jay’s first concert after nearly 3 years, there were repeated rehearsals involving the lightsticks and unfortunately, batteries in some of the lightsticks failed during the first show and we did our best to rectify in time for the second show. Fans can still keep these lightsticks by replacing its batteries.

We are sorry for the imperfections and strive to do better.
