FT SHARES HOW HE “STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM” AND NOW MAKES $500K/YR IN S’PORE

0

I am 33 years old and earn around S$ 500k a year (in total compensation) through my job. I manage a small (less than 10 person) software engineering team for a FAANG co in Singapore.

I post my career story here not to brag, but to offer a data point for what is possible to achieve through persistence and some luck.

Some background: I am self taught in computer science – I never had a single course in formal CS while in university. I am an immigrant here (I come from a poor south asian country).

I came to Singapore to work after finishing my university studies in engineering. I was an average student throughout school – I never won any awards for academic prowess (or any awards for that matter). I did not qualify for any of the better known universities in my country, and graduated from a very average school.

– Years 1-6:

Worked for one of the local research institutes (think of Astar) as a research associate. The work was hard and there were many late nights, but here is where I “grew up” as an engineer. Sometime in year 4/5, I decided to teach myself CS and software engineering.

My salary was a measly S$ 30k a year! At first I was happy and proud for landing a job like this after school (I was finishing university in my home country, and landing a job in Singapore was an exceptional achievement for me). But as the years went by, I grew sad and frustrated at my pay, and decided to pivot to a software engineering career even though I had earned a Masters degree in engineering from one of the local universities along the way.

– Year 7:

Finally left my research job! Did some startup experiments that all failed. Average pay: S$ 150k a year (though I didn’t work the full year).

At one point, a startup I was working for fired me and as a direct consequence of that I lost rights to live in Singapore. I had to move back to my country in a hurry, and hunting for jobs from there was exceptionally hard.

– Years 8 – 10:

I finally land a corporate job and start making some real money! It was a software engineering role at an international finance firm (think of something like Nomura / AIG / Prudential). Salary: S$ 200k – 240k.

– Year 11:

Landed a tech-lead type of role at another finance firm. I was responsible for leading small (5 – 10) teams of engineers on the technical parts of a product. Salary: S$ 300k – 330k.

– Year 12:

I land my current gig at a big tech co. I have formal management responsibilities for my team, and am responsible for both the people on my team + the tech produced by our team. All-in total compensation is somewhere between S$ 500k – 550k, depending on how bonuses payout and how the company’s stock performs.

Along the way, I interviewed with and rejected (and got rejected by) many, many different firms. Here is a sampling of companies that I turned down (there are many more which turned *me* down as well):

– Other local research institutes.

– “hot” local startups, such as Gojek, Grab etc.

– International finance firms, such as Prudential, Nomura, etc.

– Local finance firms, such as DBS, UOB, etc.

– Local non-tech companies, such as Singtel, Sembcorp, etc.

It was an emotional roller coaster to interview with so many different companies, and even more so to turn down job offers given that I didn’t have such abundant employment prospects in the first few years of my career. But along the way, I got really good at prospecting, interviewing, negotiating and evaluating opportunities.

On a side note, many of the local companies have proved to be absolutely terrible to negotiate with – they tend to be extremely fixated on my previous salary and almost always try to lowball by framing their offer as a percentage of current pay.

I am happy to answer questions or offer my perspective on carving a career for yourself in a follow-up post. Feel free to post on the comments.

Thank you for reading!

MAN ATE DOG THAT WAS GIVEN TO HIM FOR ADOPTION: “WHAT I DO WITH THE DOG IS MY BUSINESS”

Facebook user May Ccus said in a post on 4 August that about 2 years ago, she rescued a puppy and was trying to find a home for the little dog.

This was in the midst of Malaysia’s MCO, which lasted from March 2020 to November 2021.

She then eventually met a certain Mr Lee, who runs a soya bean stall in Taman Connaught, Cheras; a town in Kuala Lumpur.

The man said that he would love to have the puppy, and May then gave the dog to him to adopt as she thought that he loves animals.

May then recently caught up with Mr Lee and asked him how the dog was doing, and Lee then shockingly told her that the dog had been killed and cooked into a stew.

She then asked him why didn’t he return the dog to her, to which the man then told her “you gave me the dog, what I do with it is my business.”

He even told her that the dog’s meat was tender, and that his family comes from Guangxi, China, and that they are dog meat lovers.

GIRL WENT GYM AT NIGHT KENA STALK BY GUY THAT SAID “AI SIO GAN MAI”

0

I’m a 25 y/o woman and I regularly go to the gym. I’ve been going a few times a week since January. I tend to go late-ish like 9pm and i stay there for about two hours.

Well I had finished and walked out like normal to go back to my car when I see a car in the parking lot drive and come near me and some guy yelled “aye girl Ai sio gan mai” (dirty Hokkien term asking for…)  At first I thought nothing of it like whatever so stupid.

So I get inside my car and I see them park in the gym parking lot in front of me but diagonally sort of. I locked my doors and turned my gear to drive and had my foot on the gas in case anyone came up. I sat there for a moment thinking of what to do bc I didn’t want to let it go.

Well they decide to drive slowly and straight in front of me so their drivers side was facing me but still kinda far like it’s a big plaza parking lot. I took a photo of their car lol and I still waited. I saw them move a little and I started to follow but then they saw me and stopped.

They waited about 3-5 minutes w/o moving and so did I. I took a few more pics. I then decided that maybe I should just drop it and drive off. I barely got out of the parking lot when I changed my mind and came back and sneakily parked into an NTUC nearby and turned my lights off but kept my car on. I could see them leaving the parking lot so I immediately follow behind them and take a picture of their plates.

They recognized me and tried to turn but i drove off immediately and to make sure they didn’t follow I drove around a bit before I went home.

I’m going to email the gym with the photos and screenshots of me texting my friends w the time showing so they can also look at their security footage.

Basically going to say that if he goes to this gym they should do something about it because it’s absolutely deranged that a guy would harass women leaving the gym at nearly 12am.

I know he probably thought it was a joke and funny but it’s really not and he needs to learn his lesson.

INTERN FORCED TO FETCH COFFEE & BUY FOOD FOR FULL-TIMERS, WHO CALL HER “DIRT”

0

When I was doing my internship with a company. There was this head of department (HOD) and another assistant officer on the team. I was told to handle a job that was done by permanent staff. There was a former intern who briefed me about the job scope and asked me to do whichever task I have been told to do!

After he left, one my first day the HOD told me to fetch coffee from the coffee machine. I went and saw dead cockroaches in the machine. I immediately ran to my boss and told her there was a dead cockroach inside. She was like “Don’t lie to me, all the interns tend to lie and just want to shake leg at the office !”. This was the first incident.

In the second incident, they always expect me to buy food for them for lunch. If I buy and if they don’t like the food they will refuse to pay me for the food. For 3days they did this to me! I got frustrated and told them I will not be buying food for them, and ask them to help themselves. My boss threatened me she will complain to my lecturer. To which I said complain by all means but I will report to the relevant authority! She panic and from that day she did not ask me to buy food for them already.

The third incident was when my boss and the other staff went on holiday overseas she instructed staff from another department to monitor every moment of mine. I caught the staff keeps following me wherever I go including to the washroom.

In the fourth incident, we are entitled to 1-hour lunchtime but this boss only gave me 15 mins, and by the time I go and grab food the 15 mins passed. When I thought to have my lunch at my desk, she scream my name and said 15 minutes is not enough for you, is it! You are not a staff to eat in the office. Was traumatized by her that I started to skip lunch and after a month I had stomach pain and I could not eat more than a few spoonfuls of food.

I went to the hospital and they did a scan. Helicobacter pylori were found in my stomach and the doctor gave me the medication I was told to take 3 times a day and was required to go for a follow-up check-up.

I was stern with my boss telling her I need to eat on time and have to take medication. She snatch the medication and said “ You don’t lie !” and she threw the medication in the bin I took back the medication and told her my health is crucial compared to her bullish*t

I started to rebel against her. She could not handle it when I stand up for my basic rights! She issued me a warning letter saying she will destroy my future. I tore the letter and throw it in the bin.

Every day she will scream at me, and the entire company staff will ask me what happen I will tell them to ask her.

During lunchtime, I will call my parents and my best friend and cry about what I’m going through daily.

If there are monthly meetings she will instruct me to go and buy chicken rice and will ask me to open the chicken rice packet for the staff. I told her I bought it for them already that’s already a big favor why don’t they open the packet themselves. She got agitated and she told me you are not one of us you are dirt. I told her since I’m dirt I’m not going to do any of this silly task she assigns and I will only focus on my admin work.

She reported to HR saying I have mental issues and she doesn’t want to work with me. I told the hr all that happen to which they replied you just do what she said. I told my parents I really can’t work with her and I told my lecturer and request to change company.

Finally, my transfer letter was accepted, and on my last day at work in this toxic company the boss hand over the counselor’s pamphlet and ask me to seek help. I gave her the mental institution contact number and told her to admit herself there and have her head examined!

I still feel traumatized whenever I think about my internship.

APPLE ACCOUNT HACKED, SUPPORT SAYS THEY CAN NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT

0

A netizen send in an email stating that his Apple account was stolen but Apple responded that they can do nothing to secure the data on the stolen account.

The following is the transcribing of the chat with the support.

Me

  • i received an email in 2 Mar 2020, 03:51 that my phone number has been removed from the 2FA
  • I am unable to access my account
  • I have not used an iphone since iphone 3GS and I was thinking to buy an iphone but I cant sign in
  • I received a second email stating that my phone number has been changed to a number ending with 72

Apple Support

  • That’s not any good, I can help get these types of issues figured out during our chat. From what you’ve said it sounds like you’ll need to create a new Apple ID, though.
  • Are you signing into a new iPhone now?

Me

  • no, i was going to buy an iphone but I could not login my account
  • A new apple ID meaning I have to set up a brand new email? I don’t want to use a new email

Apple Support

  • Yeah, you’d have to set up a brand new email
  • Head over to iForgot.apple.com with the email address and see if you can reset the password

Me

  • there is no way to recover? Does that mean any details that were stored in the iCloud have been stolen by hackers?
  • reset password won’t make sense, as my 2FA phone number is not even mine. I already tried that

Apple Support

  • What was the email address for your Apple ID?

Me

  • ***@gmail.com

Apple Support

  • Thank you, one moment
  • Thank you for your patience. When you went through reset it came to a point it asked you to verify the trusted phone number ending in 72?

Me

  • yes
  • i still have the email from 2020
  • I did not notice it till today

Apple Support

  • Alright, I really hate to say it, but at this point the only thing you can do is create a new account

Me

  • is there anyway Apple can secure my account? my data, photos etc

Apple Support

  • When you’re setting up your new iPhone you can create an email address off of it. That way you could use an iCloud.com address
  • I hope you can understand, for security reasons there isn’t anything we can do. We cannot verify if we’re chatting with the original user, or someone else since then. The best thing to do is just create a new Apple ID

Me

  • Can I go down to a Apple office physically and produce my identification card?
  • I am still using the previous phone number before it was compromised, apple should have a record of that right?

Apple Support

  • We have to rely on the security system, nobody at Apple would have a way around it. So heading to an Apple store would only refer you back to the website and either chat support or phone support
  • When the trusted number is removed there would not be a reference for it anymore

Me

  • Does that mean there is nothing apple can do about my stolen data?

Apple Support

  • That’s right, there isn’t anything that Apple could do with the Apple ID you provided. We have no other way around using the security system

DRIVER CUTS QUEUE @ TUAS CHECKPOINT, FLASHES M’SIA PASSPORT LIKE A TALISMAN

A video emerged online showing a driver cutting queue @ the Tuas Second Link Checkpoint, before he whipped out his Malaysian passport to flash it in front of the camcar driver like it’s a talisman.

It is unclear what exactly he was trying to accomplish by flashing his passport, but netizens have deduced that he was trying to channel the spirits of his Malaysian founding fathers to ward off evil spirits.

The incident was caught on the dashcam of a netizen, Joanna Loh, who was behind the “passport-guy” in the queue.

She said that because of the heavy national day traffic, she left for the Tuas Second Link at about 7am with her sister and got through customs at about 8am.

After going through the customs, she was then trapped on the road in the traffic jam for 4 hours, and encountered the “passport-guy”.

The passport guy was driving a black honda and tried to cut into her queue, but Loh was unwilling to let him cut in and inched her car forward.

The driver had allegedly failed to signal, according to Loh, who said that she would’ve let him in if he had signalled to her.

The driver then gestured at them, asking them “what’s your problem”, before reaching into his car for his Malaysian passport and flashing it out of the window to show her.

The driver then proceeded to squeeze in front of her.

In another video, the “victorious” passport guy, after successfully cutting in front of Loh, got out of his car and points at his Malaysian licence plate, before flashing a thumbs up to Loh.

UNI GRAD FOUND A $10K/MTH JOB – “I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH ALL THESE MONEY”

0

I graduated from NUS last year and found a job I like which is actually not very sexy.
I don’t work in aircon,
I don’t have fixed schedule,
I don’t have a very classy job where you wine and dine in some fancy restaurant.

But I bring home $10k/mth. Not even kidding.

Anw I have difficulty knowing what to do with all this money. I’m so used to being a broke uni student, eating $5 meals, fast food or hawker.

Waiting until first train after a night out clubbing so I don’t have to cab. Going on dates with men just to get a free dinner. Lol.

Anw, I’ve been working rly hard and think I deserve to treat myself but idk what to buy bc I’ve never really eyed luxury goods before.

So now my question to y’all is… what’s the latest trends in bags, watches or (I would say holiday destination but it’s covid now) clothes etc.?

I alr have investments and a small apartment abroad. It actly kinda sucks to be the only one doing well when my friends are earning ~$3k or recently retrenched.

I try to stay humble or treat them to a meal. I have no interest in a car. I don’t rly engage in any vices like drugs, alcohol, ciggs.

The most I’ve spent so far is pocket money to my parents and donation. I guess I’m so used to being a broke student that I don’t really know how to be rich. Haha. Please teach me. Thank you

WOMAN REJECTS GUY, BUT HE CALLS HER AT NIGHT EVEN AFTER A YEAR

0

Wondering if I came off too strong.

I had a couple of conversations with this guy like a year ago. We spoke mid-week, once or twice and he asked if we can meet in person for a date. I told him that I will try on the weekend if possible.

Next evening, he called me 5 times. I had friends over and couldn’t pick up. He left a couple of texts. I had a lot of work and was on call with my boss till 1 am and then slept so I didn’t respond.

Had a big meeting the next day and while I was rushing to get ready, I get another call from him which I ignored. I barely reach work and my dad calls me that he got a call from the guy saying I am not responding to him.

He calls again in an hour. I pick up and yell at him for involving my father and tell him I have a busy day and would talk to him post work.

I reach home in the evening and by the time I’m out of the shower there are 3 missed calls. I call him back and tell him I’m not interested in taking things forward with him. He kept apologizing and kept asking me to reconsider. I said a hard NO and told him not to call or text again. One hour passed, and bloody hell he us texting again. So I blocked him.

Fast forward, a year I get 2 missed calls at 9 PM yesterday night from an unknown number. I called back and have trouble placing him. He reminds of the events from last year and wants to connect again. I just lost it and called him a stalker and told him that I will report it if he contacts me again.

He didn’t find my Dad’s number. He already had it due to a mutual acquaintance. However, what makes me angry is that he reached out to my Dad to get me to respond.

HUSBAND TRACKS WIFE THINKING SHE IS CHEATING, SHE MADE THINGS WORSE

0

I apologize if this is long and drawn out, so I thank you in advance if you decide to take the time to read.

So I (F29) have been with my husband (M36) for 7 years. Together, we have a daughter who is 6 and I have a son from a previous relationship who is 10.

We also have a small home in a nice neighborhood where my kids have made plenty of friends and the school seems to be ok. On the outside and on paper things look pretty great.

On the inside, not so much. We’ve had our relationship issues like anyone else but I’ve let it push me away. He became very jealous about 2-3 years into our relationship and would look through my phone.

He would always ask me if I was cheating on him which eventually turned into am I still in love with him/still attracted to him. Over time these things started to make me feel less and less attracted to him and I did voice that as best as I could at the time. To no avail, his insecurities continued.

He has been insecure about me using my “toy” alone. I actually brought it to work to leave charging in my car because I didn’t want it to lead to a lengthy and heated discussion about why I’m not “in the mood” as much.

He has a bad temper, which he has improved on but it slowly started putting a strain on things and made me not feel as comfortable opening up and being free. He has screamed in my kid’s faces and screamed at me. One time, in particular, was pretty bad because we were driving with the kids in the car and the kids were terrified as was I.

I went to the beach last week to clear my head and he blew up my phone with texts and voice messages for over an hour because I did not respond to his earlier text that day.

I actually muted him and put my phone on do not disturb because he was giving me a bit of a hard time earlier that morning when he offered to leave work early and come with me to which I told him I’d prefer to go to the beach by myself.

He didn’t throw a fit but he did make me feel bad. When I finally answered him I was on my way to my moms to pick up my son. When I got to my mom’s he called again and I said I was there and he asked “do I have to come and check?”

My mom could hear this so she said “yeah hi, she’s here” he got audibly annoyed and hung up on me.

I feel like I’ve contributed to our problems as well by avoiding things and not telling him where I am and who I’m with.

Avoiding having deep and serious discussions about the issues in our relationship because I didn’t want to argue or deal with it. I feel like I should have tried harder because now he seems to be trying harder then ever.

Last night, he asked if things were okay and I told him the truth.

That I’m not physically attracted to him anymore and I feel like I’m forcing myself to be in this relationship.

That I love him and care for him but I’m not in love with him. Again, he asks if there’s anyone else. I struggle with this answer because I do have wandering eyes lately but I don’t feel comfortable telling him even though he tells me it’s okay to admit it. I feel guilty for wanting to be with other people.

I feel like a failure and like I gave up and am throwing away 7 years because “I’m not happy”. I don’t even know how to be happy. I suggested staying with my mom and just taking a break for some space. He disagreed and wants to work at this but I’m unsure-especially because of the wandering eyes part.

When we have S, I have a very hard time staying connected and enjoying it. I almost force myself to do it because that’s what I think I need to do. I don’t feel anything when we kiss. The last two times were the worst because I’ve been so confused about everything but I did it anyway and I told him that during our conversation last night.

It’s scary because for so long, I’ve felt trapped and stuck and wanting to be free but I can’t seem to pull the trigger and I’m not sure if it’s because maybe I am still in love with him or if it’s because of the comfortability of the last 7 years will end and I’m afraid I’d be making a mistake considering how hard he wants to try. He told me he’ll spend every day making me fall in love with him again.

That makes me feel weird. We cuddled last night before falling asleep and it was nice, he wanted to try having S but I said let’s just cuddle instead and he didn’t give me an issue like he used to.

I don’t know what the I’m doing. I have two kids this is going to affect and I feel like a low-life loser that has two kids from two different dads and I can’t seem to get anything right.

I feel like I’ve screw up somehow and there’s something wrong with me, maybe because I’ve been told my entire life that there was something wrong with me.

I don’t honestly know what I want but I am starting therapy next week.

ANOTHER MAN KENA LATE FEE AFTER GRAB DRIVER PRESS “ARRIVED” WHEN HIS NOT THERE

Last month Grab announced that they will be changing the grace period from 5 minutes to 3 minutes, this change resulted in a few netizens getting penalised for extra charges.

This is not the first time someone has made a complaint about getting penalised by Grab’s new rule.

A Facebook user said that he was also penalised by this rule and he was already downstairs when he made the Grab booking, the driver had pressed “arrived” much earlier before actually arriving.

He suggested that this penalty should go both ways to drivers who said that they arrived but did not appear.

Here is what the netizen said:

I just Kena the Grab 3 minutes penalty. It did not make sense at all, I was already downstairs when I book for the Grab but the driver put “arrived” much earlier before he reached and I was penalised for no reason.

Grab’s recently changed their grace period from 5 minutes to 3mins but the thing is, a lot of drivers often press “they arrived” cause they don’t want to wait then end up we pay extra for nothing. This is ridiculous.
The penalty should go both way, if the driver no show but put as “arrived” they should give us some discounts.
