FAKE FRIEND CALL SCAM SYNDICATE CRIPPLED AND 12 ARRESTED IN JOINT TRANSNATIONAL SCAM OPERATION
In a joint operation conducted by the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD), and Johor Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) of the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), officers conducted several raids in various premises in Johor, Malaysia and crippled one transnational scam syndicate allegedly involved in fake friend calls targeting Singaporean victims.
Since January 2023, more than 490 victims have fallen prey to the fake friend call scam, with total losses amounting to at least $1.7million.
The SPF and RMP collaborated and shared critical intelligence and information on the identities and operations of the criminal syndicate.
The enquiries, analysis and collaboration paid off when the Malaysian criminal syndicate that was operating in Johor Bahru, Malaysia was located.
On 10 February 2023, officers from CCID/RMP conducted simultaneous raids at three apartment complexes in Johor, Malaysia, leading to the arrest of one female and 11 male Malaysians, aged between 16 and 27, for their suspected involvement in fake friend call scam targeting Singaporeans.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate started their scam operations sometime in December 2022, and were using Singapore prepaid SIM cards to make calls to unsuspecting victims in Singapore.
The syndicate is believed to be involved in more than 360 reports, with total losses of more than $1.3 million. Investigations against the woman and 11 men are ongoing.
Simultaneously, officers from the Anti-Scam Command, CAD and seven Police land divisions arrested and/or investigated 12 men and 2 women, aged between 18 and 46, for their suspected involvement in aiding the criminal syndicate by laundering criminal proceeds in Singapore by handing over their personal bank accounts or relinquishing their SingPass accounts.
Investigations against the 14 persons are ongoing.
The offence of facilitating unauthorized access to computer material under Section 3 read with Section 12 of the Computer Misuse Act 1993 (CMA) carries an imprisonment term of up to two years, a fine, or both.
The offence of unauthorized disclosure of access code for any wrongful gain or unlawful purpose under Section 8 of the CMA carries an imprisonment of up to three years, a fine, or both.
Director CAD, Mr David Chew said, “Scams are a serious and persistent crime concern. Transnational crime syndicates will adapt their approach vectors to get around the controls Singapore puts in place to prevent scammers from reaching victims in Singapore from overseas.
Apart from working on robust up-stream measures to disrupt the criminals’ lines of communication, the Singapore Police Force will continue to collaborate with our foreign law enforcement counterparts to detect and deter these transnational syndicates who prey on our citizens.
I would like to thank Director CCID, RMP Commissioner of Police, Dato’ Mohd Kamarudin Md Din, Johor Police Chief, Commissioner Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat and officers from the Johor Commercial Crime Investigation Department for their strong support and commitment in arresting transnational crime syndicates wherever they may seek to hide.”
The Police would like to remind members of the public to a persistent threat posed by this fake friend call scam variant, which involves scammers contacting victims through phone calls, pretending to be their friends, and thereafter asking for financial assistance.
The Police would also like to advise members of the public to adopt the following precautionary measures:
Beware of usual requests received from phones calls or messages, even if they appear to be from your family or friends; and
Verify whether the request is legitimate by checking with your family and friends through alternative means such as physical meet-ups, video calls or email other than using the contact details on your phone.
For more information on scams, members of the public can visit www.scamalert.sg or call the Anti-Scam Hotline at 1800-722-6688.
A netizen posted a photo of a restaurant banner at JEM displaying its job listings for potential job seekers, offering generous wages.
The netizen captioned it: “China restaurants are hella expensive but I’m glad they pay their staff well.”
The restaurant, Tai Er Suan Cai & Fish at JEM is offering the following jobs:
Restaurant Manager for $4,350/month
Head Chef for $3,750/month
Assistant Restaurant Manager for $3,550/month
Management Trainee for $3,360/month
Service Crew for $3,250/month
Dishwasher for $3,250/month
Additionally, they are also paying about $1,410 or $15/hr for part-timers to join their restaurant, and are offering training courses, staff meals, attendance incentives and career advancement opportunities.
Netizens’ comments
For comparison, LiHo’s basic pay per hour is $7.50 CBD bonus (and that’s for a few outlets only!!) = $9.50 per hour. MacDonald basic pay is $8.50 and with incentives it’s about $10.50 per hour This is the basic pay I was quoted last month only….
All these up to “up to” salary posts. When I was previously looking for a Job, I came a cross lots of Job postings that were within my asking salary. I had 3 years of experience with an extensive portfolio and over 100 written reviews from previous clients. During the interview, they would offer a starting salary almost 1k lower than what was stated.
Hate those business that advertise as “up to” Xxx salary.
Good. F&B is the most underpaid of all the industries. $15/h should be the base line considering that it’s customer facing, often standing only, and especially in the case of these Chinese restaurants often require you to be very effectively bilingual. Although without knowing the hours for what they consider full time it’s hard to say whether or not the head chef etc. are properly compensated. The worst restaurants I’ve seen had staff in the shop 13-14 hours a day 6 days a week.
Isn’t the head chef salary a tad too low?
all of a sudden doing food deliveries don’t feel that enticing anymore..
Fake la. Once u go interview they will low ball u. This trick is to make u go interview.

I hate how everything revolves around money. Like literally everything. I have always love treating and putting my families needs before mine (this is when i am doing part time jobs and have no commitments). Like i would not mind spending half of my salary on them just to make them happy because it feels nice seeing them smile…but now ( with a full time job that pays 1.6k as basic) i just feel like i can’t do that anymore.
Everything around is just too expensive and my pay is not increasing at the same rate as everything else. Now with every bills i have to pay and savings that i need to put aside i can’t afford to be like how i use to.
Its getting tiring everyday. I go to work and work my a$$ of and by the end of the month i get my salary which would be gone by the next day because i finish paying everything i need to pay for the month. I am tired and worried that in the future i cant cope with how much expensive things are getting and i would fall behind. I feel bad that i cant afford nice things for my family again.
I always thought that i shld find a higher paying job but i realised that the more my pay is theres more things i have to commit to. Haiyaa tired lah now i have to worry about if i can afford buying my own house or else i just be homeless.
To my family: I am sorry if i am being petty to you guys about money now but i hope u all can understand my situation. I promise to work damn hard to make u guys happy.
Here are what netizens think:
Good attitude. Cost of living increases suck but nothing much we can do about that. If you want more than your current amount, you either have to work harder, or increase the value of your time. Try going for Skillsfuture courses, upskill, and get a higher paying job that doesn’t need you to work longer hours or harder. Work smart not just hard.
To how many families you are trying to make them happy? 1.6K is about the same salary I get before deducting my CPF. So I just put my family first. Spending are basically for the food and utilities. Once in a while then go for fastfood or sushi. See ahead which month you may need to spend more like birthdays and insurance, then try to save more during other months. You can do it. When you conrirbute enough in your CPF, the hard days won’t be forever
Yup. Focus on getting money first, then you can make them happy!
61-year-old Soh Guan Hup was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment on 20 February after being found guilty of one count of outrage of modesty, according to Channel NewsAsia.
The private driving instructor had molested a female student during a driving lesson in which he was teaching the victim how to park a car in 2018.
The victim took 24 manual driving lessons from Soh between 2017 and 2018, and she would board his car near the Bukit Gombak MRT station.
The lessons would be conducted near the Bukit Batok Driving Centre and the Lim Chu Kang area, and the victim claimed that Soh would joke about inappropriate things during the lessons.
He joked that he could rape her when they were driving towards Lim Chu Kang because of how dark and quiet the roads were.
On 3 March 2018, Soh was teaching the victim how to park on a side road in Choa Chu Kang when she felt him press a finger against her chest.
She was so affected that she couldn’t park the car and Soh had to take over the steering wheel.
The victim then told her boyfriend about what happened, along with her parents, and her father wanted to report the man to the police but her mother wanted to get more information from the victim first.
The victim eventually didn’t report Soh to the police.
on 8 March 2018, before her final driving lesson and driving test, the victim and her boyfriend confronted Soh, who denied the accusations. She then proceeded with her final driving lesson with Soh and took her test, paying him the car rental fee and cutting off all contact with him.
The victim later confided in a friend about the molestation in 2020, who then told her that outrage of modesty cases can be reported at any time, and the victim then lodged a police report.
Soh denied touching the victim and claimed that any contact physically was accidental, he added that he avoided contact because it would be dangerous while driving.
He also added that he had more than 1,200 students over 30 years and had few complaints.
Soh was eventually found guilty but is intending to appeal against his conviction.
The tech industry in Singapore and Computer Science is now at the top of the food chain and the forefront of development. It can be said that CS and Tech are the king of all jobs right now.
Computing students have both the money and the power, they earn a lot and are generally respected by our society. This is just a small but true story to demonstrate why the tech industry is blooming:
My younger brother (born 1995) have just graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering at NUS. However, instead of going for the traditional ME role, he self-taught everything about programming and software engineering, signed up for CS modules as his UEs, and worked remotely for a mid-tier American company for 2 years.
How he did it
He went to class in the morning and went online for only 3 – 4 hours every night to have his works done, earning an official net monthly salary of 3600 USD – or about 4800 SGD. But the main income actually comes from the freelance and commissioned outside projects – completing 1 to 2 of these every week and he could easily earn 9k – 10k SGD in total without paying any additional dollar of tax. After working for nearly 3 years, he now owns a car and a large condominium in Orchard.
Almost every girl are infatuated whenever they hear about IT guys and software engineers. There is this girl studying oversea in Australia, coming back here in Singapore to work and was referred by her older sister to work at the same bank. For some unknown reasons, when my younger brother goes to that bank and doing some transactions, he got both the girl and her elder sister at the same time, and all three started to live with each other in my younger brother’s condominium. The two sisters are hailed from a relatively wealthy and prestigious family, with the father being a university professor and the mother working as a civil servant for the government.
When the parents first heard about the news of all three of them living together, they are quite angry and threaten to disown the two sisters. However, after hearing that my younger brother works in the tech industry, they completely changed their attitude towards him. They called and inquired him almost every week, giving him gifts and doing everything to push him to marry their precious daughters as quickly as possible, so as not to miss on the opportunity. My younger brother should have married the elder sister this month, but due to Covid-19 restrictions and some other issues, they have been delaying their wedding ceremony.
Singapore actor and comedian Mark Lee expressed his disappointment and called out the online scammers who used his photo to make badly-edited photos of him looking like a hardened criminal.
He shared a few of the photos that he found, showing the scammers’ lack of effort in editing his face onto the photos of the criminals.
Posting on his Instagram story, Lee asked the scammers:
“I’m the most wanted criminal in the world? If you’re gonna photoshop my face, at least get an expert to do it. Surely people won’t believe this, will they? Let’s take a look at their wonderful creations!”
The first photo shows Lee being escorted by the FBI, with the caption: “Only 5% of Singaporeans know this,” and shows his head looking significantly smaller than his body.
Emblazoned across the photo was the title “A SCANDAL THAT SHOCKED THE WHOLE WORLD,” and “Mark Lee Kok Huang didn’t know the camera was still recording, is this the end of his career?”
Man’s looking like Jack Jeebs from Men In Black.
The original photo was from an article in 2014 where American gangster Vincent Asaro was arrested.
The second photo showed Lee standing handcuffed inside a courtroom, with the same headline emblazoned across the photo, and another subheader stating “Mark Lee didn’t know the camera was still recording.”
The original photo was from an Article from NBC news about former Chinese politician Bo Xilai who was convicted of embezzlement and bribery back in 2013.
The third photo showed Lee standing side by side with a couple of police officers, only difference is the skin tone of his face and his body not exactly matching.
Summing up his Instagram story, Lee told his followers “don’t believe them, I only have one Instagram account and it’s this one which is verified. Please don’t be scammed into buying or investing anything, these scammers are everywhere, everyone be careful. If you see them please report and block them.”
My life felt like it was over when my wife told me that I had to ‘submit’ my monthly salary to her. It was her tradition to do this, and I was not happy about it.
The custom of a wife taking control of a husband’s finances is not uncommon in our SG culture but she said it is in China.
As the man of the house, I am expected to provide for my family and take care of all the financial matters. It seems that my wife believes that she should be the one to handle the money, and when I objected, she insisted that it was her right.
I felt like my freedom was being taken away from me.
I had worked hard to earn my salary and felt that it should be my choice what I did with it. I felt like I had no say in the matter, and I was powerless to stop her from taking control.
I was also worried about how this would affect our relationship. I had always been the one to take care of the finances, and I was uncomfortable with the idea of giving up that role to my wife. I was afraid that this would change the dynamics of our marriage and that she would become the one in charge.
I tried to talk to her about it, but she refused to listen. She told me that it was her right to take control of the finances and that I had to accept it. I felt helpless and frustrated. I had no way to make her understand my point of view and I felt like my life was over.
She said if I have money I will fool around.
I was also worried about the implications of this decision. I knew that if I agreed to her demand, then it could lead to other problems. What if she decided to control other aspects of my life? What if she started to make decisions that I didn’t agree with? I felt like I was being stripped of my freedom and autonomy.
After a lot of arguing and pleading, I finally gave in and agreed to let her take control of the finances. I felt like I had no other choice and I had to accept her decision. It was a difficult decision, but I knew that it was necessary for the sake of our marriage.
Now, my wife is in charge of our finances and I’m not happy about it. I still feel like my life is over and I’m not sure how I’m going to cope with this new arrangement. I know that I need to trust her and that she will make the right decisions for our family, but I still don’t feel comfortable with it.
It’s been a few months since my wife took control of the finances and I’m still trying to adjust to the new arrangement. I feel like I’m constantly walking on eggshells, and I’m worried that I’m going to make a mistake and upset her. I know that I need to trust her, but I can’t help but feel like I’m losing my freedom and autonomy.
I know that this is the way it has to be, but I still feel like my life is over.
Now she make me feel really like fooling around because home is no longer a comfort zone.
How would you outwardly treat a co-worker whom you learnt has been making personal attacks and trash-talking you behind your back, but continues to act really friendly to your face?
This co-worker, along with a few others, have also attempted to lead me to believe something about our mutual co-worker was true, and unfortunately I realised it wasn’t true only after everything was said and done, but by then it was already too late.
They have since been making use of this incident to make fun of me and put me in a spot in front of the rest of our co-workers whenever they get the chance to do so, always trying to paint me out to be someone that I’m not.
Here are what netizens think:
I always tell myself, there is no friends in work as you go there to work and not make friends. Stick to that rules and you can keep yourself from trouble.
Be careful who you trust in this world haha!
Always remember co-workers are not your friends… I don’t even add them on Facebook
The mouth grow on their face, let them say whatever they want, just focus to do ur work. That’s what I did. My colleagues can say whatever they like but 99% I just ignore and just focus on my work. Maybe I anti social , but I lazy to mingle too. I don’t go around say hi too. Do my work , time’s up and I just go home btw I lunch alone too, that’s peace. Sometimes they call me or text me, I always say I will return their call but I never. Until the management walk by, I have no choice but to just smile and make small talks otherwise I just can’t be bothered.
