NASI PADANG STALL GIVES AWAY FREE KOPI & TEH EVERY CNY – TRUE KAMPUNG SPIRIT

0

Facebook user Collin Ng shared how a Nasi Padang stall at Circuit Road, Makanan Singapura, has been giving away free Teh-O and Kopi-O every Chinese New Year.

He said that during the Chinese New Year period, when all the drink stalls are mostly closed, Makanan Singapura has been giving away free drinks instead of taking the opportunity to make extra bucks.

Here is what he said

This seems to an annual thingy during CNY for this Muslim stall, ‘Makanan Singapura’.

As expected Chinese stalls are closed during this period including all the drink stall operators. Instead of taking this opportunity to make extra bucks, they offer complimentary coffee or tea to anyone who does not need to patronise their stall.

This stall is located at Blk 89 Circuit Road Food n Market. This is true kampung spirit in this old neighbourhood. The stall deserves our overwhelming praises.

MAN CANNOT TAKE IT AS BUDDHIST FUNERAL PLAY CHANTING 24/7 ON LOUD VOLUME

For the past few days (no physical wake around etc.), there non-stop 24/7 E-chanting around my estate! in Sengkang.

Called Singapore Police Force for 2 times, but the officers on the line just take it lightly and say they’ll report to HDB as they only attend to Emergency cases.

Rude note left behind by a resident

The note says:

Dear “Buddhist” neighbour,
Your 24/7 non-stop Amithbha funeral wake e-chanting is annoying and causing noise pollution.
You won’t find inner peace by just making a loud continuous meaningless e-chanting.
You are blocking your own blessings as those who are disturbed by you, may or already keep putting a curse on you.
Please stop making shame on Amitabha. Be considerate to your neighbours and lower your volume or close off your windows.
If you need enlightenment or you are facing a mental health crisis, please call 63892000

At 11.30 PM, 21 Jan 2023

Since when did noise disturbance in the neighborhood doesn’t warrant a proper investigation? Even my fellow neighbors pasted this paper on the wall of the lift lobby!

Imagine hearing the chanting 24/7 when you reach home, about to sleep, and even when you wake up and go to work! Sengkang GRC Please do something !

MAN PAISEH TO TAKE ANG PAO DURING CNY, REJECTS RELATIVES BUT THEY GIVE MORE MONEY INSTEAD

0

Is there any way to reject receiving Ang Bao nicely?

Yes, I totally get that ang baos are just a symbolic gesture of giving and receiving blessings, but it still just feel damn weird to me that I, as a fully working mid-30s adult, am still receiving ang bao money from retired uncles and aunties.

Heck, even receiving ang bao money from my cousins barely 10 years older than me just felt weird. Doesn’t matter whether there’s $2 or $10 inside.

Every year in recent years, I’d just take the ang bao but tell my relatives that there’s no need to give for the following year, but of course, that never happened.

I also tried gifting a can of abalone to relatives who gives me ang bao, but I realised

(1) not everyone actually appreciates or eat abalone, and
(2) that ironically pressures people to put more money in the ang bao for the following year.

For the fellow older but still single adults out there, is there any way to gracefully reject ang baos? Or do you just resign yourself to receiving it (and maybe donating those money away)?

EARTH’S INNER CORE MAY BE SPINNING IN OTHER DIRECTION, EFFECT ON EARTH UNKNOWN

0

Nature Geoscience published a study on 13 January, saying that the Earth’s inner core might have started spinning in the opposite direction.

At the time of writing, there isn’t much known about what effect the reverse spinning of the core might have on the planet.

Nature Geoscience’s study was done via analysis of seismic waves from earthquakes over the last 60 years.

The authors of the study, Xiaodong Song and Yi Yang from Peking University, told AFP that the inner core had almost stopped rotating in 2009, before it started spinning in the other direction.

The Earth had previously spun the other way in the 1970s, before it changed direction, and the authors of the study had predicted the next change in direction (after the present one) is expected to be in the 2040s.

The authors said that they hope their study can motivate researchers to build and test models which treat the whole planet as an integrated dynamic system.

They suggested that all of the earth’s layers might be linked physically, from the surface all the way to the inner core.

NETIZEN SICK OF PEOPLE RECORDING AND POSTING EVERY SINGLE THING ONLINE

0

Sick and tired of people recording everything.

Someone fell down? Oh let me get out my phone and record it instead of helping. Oh my cat got is leg caught in a loop and is stressing out. Let me record it and post it online. My dad is dying in the hospital, let me record it and post myself crying about it later.

ITS GETTING ANNOYING. STOP RECORDING EVERYTHING. PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE.

Netizens’ comments

  1. It’s ironic that the idea of recording stuff is to capture the moment but recording frequently prevents you from experiencing the moment.
Even if you rewatch you are essentially now a passive observer.
  2. I totally agree. I saw an “influencer” (I hate that term) recording herself having an anxiety attack. I’ve had multiple anxiety attacks and not once have I ever thought “I should totally record this!”
  3. I really hate those people who do this and have no consideration for those in their background. I’m scared of going to the gym because of how much I would dread being in the background of those posts.
  4. If I ever get married, I am making a no camera rule at my wedding.
Who wants photos of people taking photos.
  5. The part about recording a dying relative is actually valid. Ok. For some people they may not have pictures and video of their loved one and this will be their last chance to do so. They shouldn’t post it to TikTok or anything but I mean who are you to say this is wrong

MAN SICK OF THICK SKIN RELATIVES, COMPLAIN ABOUT FOOD, GO TOILET DONO HOW TO AIM

0

CNY … Haiz… Thick skin relatives

Just need to get some steam off.

I don’t get why my relatives can be so unhygienic…

We also very suay our relatives decided to come at dinner time, and buay paiseh keep hinting very hungry.

We just wanted to reheat our reunion steamboat leftovers (have a lot because they keep asking for this that and my cousins also bought some ingredients over) to have a simple meal but some of them are vegetarian (on chu yi), some have allergy.

Plus they hint hint till we cannot act blur liao. It’s the elders and not the younger ones, at first my cousins say just buy fast food but the elders … … Actually why they can’t just end the visiting and go find their own food since they want so customise! And they have the cheek to say “oh we previously at uncle X house, dare not ask them for food lah, paiseh.” Then come our house ask for food buay paiseh!? We owe you ah?

In the end we go buy from Malay and indian store nearby. Since have to separate if order on Grab. There is 10 of them, cost us over $60. (And it’s because we didn’t buy enough for 10)

In the end, the noisiest one, eat a bit only then complain heaty, spicy lah… Wah piang! What you want?

Nevermind, after dinner, we served them fruits. We got some oranges, grapes and plum. Wah piang, they left the seeds and pits unwrapped all over our table! Seriously!? We provided them with ample of tissues and 2 bins (only half filled when they left) and they cannot throw inside but must leave on the table!?!?

Then the toilet, cannot aim and cannot clean, the toilet bowl seats full of visible yellow droplets. The tap still got soap residue… We provided a hand towel at the toilet door for them to wipe their hands but I discovered my bath towel got curry stain… … Is it the 2 years without visiting due to Covid have made them forget basic manner? If you dripped, at least wipe them off lah! And I don’t believe you can’t see the tap still have soap residue lo!

They say want to come over again next weekend, say arrange potluck. I told them straight we going to Malaysia. Better siam fast fast.

SPOTIFY BECOMES LATEST TECH COMPANY TO RETRENCH WORKERS, CEO: “I TAKE FULL ACCOUNTABILITY”

0

Spotify Technology announced on 23 January that they would be retrenching about 6% of their employees, with the CEO Daniel Ek saying that the decision was “difficult” but “necessary”.

He reasoned that it was because of their growing expenditure for their operations exceeding their revenue.

Spotify’s press release

Earlier today, CEO Daniel Ek shared the following note about the company’s organizational changes with all Spotify employees.

Team,

As we say in our Band Manifesto, change is the only constant. For this reason, I continue to reiterate that speed is the most defensible strategy a business can have. But speed alone is not enough. We must also operate with efficiency. It’s these two things together that will fuel our long-term success. With this in mind, I have some important news to share today.

While we have made great progress in improving speed in the last few years, we haven’t focused as much on improving efficiency. We still spend far too much time syncing on slightly different strategies, which slows us down. And in a challenging economic environment, efficiency takes on greater importance. So, in an effort to drive more efficiency, control costs, and speed up decision-making, I have decided to restructure our organization.

To start, we are fundamentally changing how we operate at the top. To do this, I will be centralizing the majority of our engineering and product work under Gustav as Chief Product Officer and the business areas under Alex as Chief Business Officer. I’m happy to say that Gustav and Alex, who have been with Spotify for a long time and have done great work, will be leading these teams as co-presidents, effectively helping me run the company day-to-day. They’ll tell you more about what this means in the coming days, but I’m confident that with their leadership, we’ll be able to achieve great things for Spotify.

Personally, these changes will allow me to get back to the part where I do my best work—spending more time working on the future of Spotify—and I can’t wait to share more about all the things we have coming.

As a part of this change, Dawn Ostroff has decided to depart Spotify. Dawn has made a tremendous mark not only on Spotify, but on the audio industry overall. Because of her efforts, Spotify grew our podcast content by 40x, drove significant innovation in the medium and became the leading music and podcast service in many markets. These investments in audio offered new opportunities for music and podcast creators and also drove new interest in the potential of Spotify’s audio advertising. Thanks to her work, Spotify was able to innovate on the ads format itself and more than double the revenue of our advertising business to €1.5 billion. We are enormously grateful for the pivotal role she has played and wish her much success. In the near term, Dawn will assume the role of senior advisor to help facilitate this transition. Alex will take on the responsibility for the content, advertising and licensing work going forward and you’ll hear more from him on that.

The need to become more efficient

That brings me to the second update. As part of this effort, and to bring our costs more in line, we’ve made the difficult but necessary decision to reduce our number of employees.

Over the next several hours, one-on-one conversations will take place with all impacted employees. And while I believe this decision is right for Spotify, I understand that with our historic focus on growth, many of you will view this as a shift in our culture. But as we evolve and grow as a business, so must our way of working while still staying true to our core values.

To offer some perspective on why we are making this decision, in 2022, the growth of Spotify’s OPEX outpaced our revenue growth by 2X. That would have been unsustainable long-term in any climate, but with a challenging macro environment, it would be even more difficult to close the gap. As you are well aware, over the last few months we’ve made a considerable effort to rein-in costs, but it simply hasn’t been enough. So while it is clear this path is the right one for Spotify, it doesn’t make it any easier—especially as we think about the many contributions these colleagues have made.

Like many other leaders, I hoped to sustain the strong tailwinds from the pandemic and believed that our broad global business and lower risk to the impact of a slowdown in ads would insulate us. In hindsight, I was too ambitious in investing ahead of our revenue growth. And for this reason, today, we are reducing our employee base by about 6% across the company. I take full accountability for the moves that got us here today.

My focus now is on ensuring that every employee is treated fairly as they depart. While Katarina will provide more detail on all of the specifics around the ways we are committed to supporting these talented bandmates, the following will apply to all impacted employees:

  • Severance pay: We will start with a baseline for all employees with the average employee receiving approximately 5 months of severance. This will be calculated based on local notice period requirements and employee tenure.
  • PTO: All accrued and unused vacation will be paid out to any departing employee.
  • Healthcare: We will continue to cover healthcare for employees during their severance period.
  • Immigration support: For employees whose immigration status is connected with their employment, HRBPs are working with each impacted individual in concert with our mobility team.
  • Career Support:  All employees will be eligible for outplacement services for 2 months.

What’s Next

In almost all respects, we accomplished what we set out to do in 2022 and our overall business continues to perform nicely. But 2023 marks a new chapter. It’s my belief that because of these tough decisions, we will be better positioned for the future. We have ambitious goals and nothing has changed in our commitment to achieving them.

We’ve come a long way in our efforts to build a comprehensive platform for creators of all levels, but there’s still much to be done. To truly become the go-to destination for creators, we need to keep improving our tools and technology, explore new ways to help creators engage with their audiences, grow their careers, and monetize their work.

In fact, looking at our roadmap, with the changes we are making and what we have planned to share at our upcoming Stream On event, I’m confident that 2023 will be a year where consumers and creators will see a steady stream of innovations unlike anything we have introduced in the last several years. I will share more about these exciting developments in the coming weeks.

Finally, I hope you will join me tomorrow for Unplugged.

And again, for those of you who are leaving, I thank you for everything you’ve done for Spotify and wish you every future success.

– Daniel

GUY FROM RICH FAMILY ASKS WHY SHOULD HE WORK, FATHER PUSHES HIM TO GO OUT & SPEND MONEY

0

Coming from money has spoiled me and ruined my drive.

Most people here will laugh at this or dismiss me as an ungrateful privileged brat but coming from money has ruined my ability to get anything done.

I understand that I have it better off than those in poverty but living in wealth with no need to work for anything has been a miserable existence.

My family is what you would consider nouveau riche, with my father being raised in lower middle class and making everything by himself.

But rather than pass his drive and grit he has done nothing but overwhelm me with excess. As a teenager I used to be more introverted and would prefer to stay in and play minecraft rather than go out, this confused him and he pushed me to go out, spend money in clubs and restaurants with his friends kids and enjoy a life of excess.

I guess I understand where he is coming from, never having had any of this I guess he wanted to give me all he never had.

But after years of unlimited credit cards, expensive habits, I find myself at 24 with absolutely no drive.

Why would I work? I have a credit card that I can get anything with, a nice car that takes me anywhere, for god’s sake I even have maids that clean up my room so I don’t have the basic skill of organizing my surroundings.

I am essentially a 24 year old child.

I am sure the reaction I will get here with be overwhelmingly negative as this problem sounds absurd. Most of you will think me spoiled and out of touch with reality. The worst part is you would not be wrong, I absolutely am. But having enough self awareness to realize this, combined with watching all my friends work hard, achieve goals, and make something of themselves, has left me completely empty inside with thoughts of ending it all rather than live on as a spoiled adult living a life that consumes but does not add to the world.

The victims were also all Chinese farm workers.

INSURANCE AGENTS SELLING “GET RICH QUICK” COURSES TO GULLIBLE PEOPLE, PROMISE 5-DIGITS/MTH

Financial advisors and their unrealistic expectations. Why?

I used to follow a couple of advisors from the same advisory group till i realized wow, it’s just different p**p dressed in different designer clothes preaching the exact same thing. And yes, the majority of their contents are similar to other advisory groups; “What if I tell you you can retire early?” “What if i tell you you can maintain your lifestyle WITHOUT spending too much?” “What if i tell you you can have financial freedom?” and then they’ll preach about aiming to earn $10k to $14k by 30 and that it’s doable for everybody if they put in the effort.

And oh, by the effort they meant….? Yea, no follow up. Not trying to be a sour grape, but. majority of us in Singapore are working for a fixed monthly income +- the random overtime. Yes they preach side-hustle, but how many of us really have the time and energy to do that? Unless we work from 9 to 6 and then teach tuition at night and do grab over the weekends. But for. majority of us, our main career is already draining us.

And for them to preach earning $10k-$14k a month, it’s ridiculous and it breeds toxicity. That people who don’t earn $10k, are way behind the curve. Unless you work in IT or banking, I believe a majority of us Singaporeans might not even reach that $10k mark. But of course, for them $10k is definitely achievable; sell scammy products to unsuspecting victims and your commission adds up, and boom $10k. Sounds like a prostitute to me or an onlyfans creator to me just that they’re selling different parts. Same same. Also, morality issues. At least prostitutes and only fans creator are upfront with their intentions, which makes them more respectable than the scums.

A hotel employee won’t randomly get $10k by checking in more people, nor will a waiter earn $10k for sending more plates out but hey, life goes on.

Netizens’ comments

  • its not. they basically sell u the unrealistic course for few hundred $$$. then if u dumb enough to subscribe … thats where they earn their money.
not through “side hustle” or “dropshipping” or whatnot
if im rich why would i sell my recipe for success, thats like shooting myself in the foot
  • People selling “get rich quick” or “how to invest” courses are preying on gullible people. They do so by promising things that are objectively amazing (having passive income, making tons of money). The more you struggle, the more you dream of it. It’s unfair and bad, but that is how these people make money.
As long as people dream and have hopes, there will be other people preying on that sadly.
  • They’re just trying to sell you a dream so you’d pay for their course. There is no such thing as fast and easy money. Eventually, only they benefit from the course fee you paid and you’d still be back at your $3k/mth job. You can only side hustle so much before you burn out and fall sick which isn’t worth it because medical bills aren’t cheap.
  • Basically Financial Advisor (FA) are no different than a normal any salesperson (only that FA are governed by MAS). Only that all FA try to glorified all their work. And sadly, the society we live in often view people equipped with branded goods successful or at least successful at what they do. I’m sure you have that one friend that wears all branded goods and somehow you felt he might be doing well or doing not too bad. So with all these external elements attached, suddenly people will feel unrealistic expectations isn’t that unachievable anymore. At end of the day, FA is still just a sales job, and many of the FA are also being painted unrealistic rewards but how many of them made it? IMO, It’s a sunset industry with more and more technology replacing FA.
