RIVER VALLEY STUDENTS GIVEN WORKSHEET ON TRAUMA: “I WAS MADE FOR THIS CHALLENGE”

A River Valley High School student shed light on the measures that the school has taken to help them deal and cope with the trauma of the murder that happened at the school.

A 2 hour CARE programme was arranged for the students, which was described (by the students themselves) as “measely”.

They said that they were given a worksheet filled with checkmarks or emotions and coping strategies “as if it was some Primary CCE class”.

One of the coping strategies was “I was made for this challenge”, which many students found to be inappropriate.

They highlighted that it felt like the school just wanted to “quickly pack matters up and move on”.

The student added: “Most of us feel that we shouldn’t even be in school right now, especially so for those who have witnessed the scene.”

They then questioned: “Why is the government still allowing students to return to a place where something traumatic has just happened? It has only been a day.”

“Its clearly not enough time for us to process what had happened.”

It has only been a day, and ppl are acting as if the holiday is a buffer day, even though its clearly not enough time for us to process what had happened. This would also take a toll for those who have experienced trauma before or suffers from other mental illnesses/ issues. we wish to remain anonymous, thank you!"
